We are offering a sign-on bonus of up to $25,000 based on experience and commitment to UPMC.

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a Surgical Technologist to join their Ambulatory Surgery department! This position is Monday through Friday, daylight hours, with no holidays, on-call, or weekends. The department has 6 OR rooms and a great team atmosphere. We are waiting to hire our next member!

This role offers a valuable step in a career ladder with opportunities for growth and advancement. Title and salary will be determined based on education and experience.

Purpose:

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, performs advanced tasks in the Operating Room to assist the surgical team. Works on complex surgical procedures within at least two specialties. Sets up sterile environments, passes instruments, prepares supplies, assists in cleanup, checks equipment, and restocks the OR. May be responsible for special trays, graft materials, and recording patient data during procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in patient transfer post-surgery and clean/restock the OR.
  • Serve as a resource and preceptor for staff, students, and new employees.
  • Handle specimens and assist with dressings.
  • Participate in committees and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Help with sterile gowning and gloving procedures.
  • Prepare the OR before surgery, including setting up instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborate to disseminate new knowledge.
  • Label and hand medications to the surgeon per policies.
  • Maintain a safe, aseptic environment, monitoring hazards.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and positioning.
  • During surgery, pass instruments, hold retractors, and assist with sponge and needle counts.
  • Must meet PA legislative requirements, including completion of an accredited program, certification, or military training, and maintain certification or meet grandfathering provisions.
  • Complete continuing education as required, including 30 hours every two years if not certified.
  • Have experience in surgical specialties such as general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic, OB-GYN, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, or endoscopy.
  • Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse.
  • New graduates have six months to become certified.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CPR required within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification as CST or TSC within 6 months of program completion, with provisions for employment prior to certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR.
  • Other certifications as specified.
