Surgical Technologist Inpatient (PRN)

Shift: Rotating days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays

Job Overview

This position involves assisting the professional nursing staff and physicians during the pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure phases of surgical care. The role includes preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile fields, assisting surgeons, managing instruments and equipment, and contributing to inventory control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion, including organizing equipment and instruments, and setting up for emergency cases quickly and accurately.
  • Assisting the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures.
  • Maintaining a sterile field at all times in the procedure area and efficiently handling surgical instruments at the physician’s request.
  • Verifying specimens with surgeons and nurses.
  • Assisting the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved with the surgical procedure.
  • Achieving and maintaining working knowledge of all operating room machinery and equipment used on the sterile field, such as lasers, scope equipment, and electric and nitrogen motors.
  • Receiving and verifying correct implants for all surgical procedures, including grafts, orthopedic hardware, and allograft.
  • Assisting with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students.
  • Assisting in transporting patients to the operating room when necessary.
  • Performing decontamination, assembly, and sterilization according to infection control and established quality assurance monitoring guidelines.
  • Operating sterilization equipment, including steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, washer/sterilizers, and automated cart washers, in accordance with manufacturer directions and safety protocols.
  • Utilizing desktop and laptop computers and handheld PDAs for instrument decontamination, assembly, and tracking functions.

Requirements

  • Completion of a technical certificate from an accredited Surgical Technician program.
  • Ability to work the specified hours, with visual acuity adequate to perform duties, and effective communication skills to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon hire.
  • Less than 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technician.
