This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by being an expert practitioner involved in more advanced scrub roles, providing assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. Acts as an accountable expert in equipment utilized in the operating room.

Job Duties

Demonstrates the required knowledge and technical skills to independently perform core and specialty procedures in vascular, thoracic, and open-heart procedures.

Can professionally guide RN circulators in their role and function as second circulator.

Anticipates the expected progression of events and modifies the plan accordingly.

Demonstrates an increased level of prioritization.

Possesses knowledge of multiple types of equipment.

Possesses knowledge of contents of instrument trays in the open heart service.

Serves as orientation assistant for open heart team members and models positive behavior.

Assists the surgeon and the PA throughout the procedure.

Scrubs for all procedures in the open heart service.

Monitors supply usage in the OR to assure cost-effectiveness.

Responds within scope of practice to emergencies and life-threatening conditions using critical thinking skills.

Adheres to and promotes patient safety practices throughout the patient experience.

Communicates and collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team.

Maintains proper sterile technique throughout the procedure by diligent aseptic technique.

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a specialty team.

Department Specific Duties

Performs Surgical Assistant duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must meet Level II criteria

Demonstrates knowledge of techniques used by various surgeons for various procedures

Maintains technical skill level and adapts to changes in surgical technique and operative intervention modalities.

Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff and nurse manager toward the organization

Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by nurse manager

Professional Experience

Must have 3 years of surgical technician experience

Education

Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program or equivalent experience required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

Currently certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
