Overview:

Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Maintains accountability for the provision of surgical instruments to the surgical team. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Anticipates surgeon and operative team members needs regarding care delivery, maintaining sterile technique and comfort.
Assists surgeon in a knowledgeable, efficient and courteous manner.
Knows procedure and/or utilizes preference cards to assure instrument and equipment needs are available so team can stay patient focused: participates in updating preference cards.
Inspects instruments and power equipment prior to use to assure operational order and troubleshoots, reports, and removes faulty instrument and equipment from service.
Performs or assists in sterile preps as needed/requested by monitoring aseptic techniques of surgical team members at field, reporting and correcting breaks in sterile technique immediately, and controlling location of contaminated instruments and supplies.
Utilizes downtime effectively; restocks room; plans for next day; assists other team members as needed.
Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.

Prepares equipment, instruments, and supplies for efficient utilization:
Instruments are prepared for sterilization using point of use cleaning throughout the surgical procedure as established by policy. Upon completion of procedure unused supplies are handled according to established procedures. Room turnover or termination is completed according to department procedure.

Communication Management:
Listens to physicians and communicates need to circulator in advance (anticipates).
Anticipates needs of surgeon by paying attention and responding appropriately.
Recognizes and reports emergency situations.
Communicates with physician, confirms correct specimen and disposition to circulator (under the direction of physician).
Communicates delays or completion before scheduled time to circulator to ensure efficient room utilization or schedule changes.
Communicates instrument and equipment problems to appropriate team member and identifies repair needs according to policy.

Technology:
Demonstrates competence in initiating and maintaining use of routine equipment and procedures.
Performs technical skills relative to specific specialties i.e., assembling instrumentation and equipment (retractors, power equipment, etc.).
Assists in evaluation of new products, equipment, policies, procedures and standard.
Fills out appropriate paperwork to assist with decisions.

Stewardship Awareness:
Plans, organizes and evaluates work activities appropriately.
Works efficiently and quickly producing high quality work.
Conserves resources and watches for a better way to complete work.
Is responsible to staffing needs.

Performs miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (Level III):
Education: High-School Diploma or GED are required. You may be asked to provide proof of education.
Licensure: Non-certified applicants may be considered for this position with acceptable surgical technology experience.
Experience: Non-certified applicants may be considered for this position with acceptable surgical technology experience.
Certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Other: Must understand English both written and spoken, must be able to safely and successfully perform job-related functions, with or without reasonable accommodation required by federal, state, or local law.

Preferred:
Education: Successful completion of a Postsecondary certificate or associate degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited surgical technology program.
Licensure - Certification: Surgical Technology Certification preferred.
