MercyOne Medical Group in Mason City, IA, is seeking a Surgical Technologist for day shifts in the operating room. The role supports patient care across surgical cases, maintaining asepsis and instrument handling. Qualifications include Surgical Tech certification, 2+ years of experience, and BLS. Compliance with mandatory abuse reporting and other pre-employment checks is required.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a surgical technologist program or graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience.
• Certification as a surgical technologist required.
• Must have at least 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech.
• Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) via current card prior to employment.
• Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training.

Responsibilities

• Assist the circulating nurse in assessing patient needs and help develop the care plan.
• Provide care to surgical patients according to standards and guidelines.
• Set up operating rooms and prepare instruments.
• Ensure safe patient transport when needed.
• Prepare surgical sites, manage sterile field, and assist surgeons under supervision.
• Utilize supplies efficiently and maintain knowledge across surgical specialties.
• Meet productivity expectations defined by the unit manager.

Position Purpose:

The surgical technologist, using the principles of medical asepsis, prepares the operating room for surgical cases of all specialties and instruments the surgical procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon. The surgical technologist provides care within the MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures.

What you Will Do:

• Assists the circulating nurse in assessing the patients' needs and helps to develop and implement the plan of care.

• Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with the operating room’s performance standards, physician preference cards, and the AORN Standards of Care and Practice.

• Assists in setting up rooms.

• Secures safe transport of the patient if needed.

• Confirms correctness of the surgical site, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse.

• Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources.

• Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager.

• Identifies accurate changes on surgeons' preference cards.

• Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during the case and in the department.

• Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties.

Hours:

• Day Shift - 8- hour shifts.

• Specialty team: call 10-12 days per month

• Call response time is 30 min.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Graduate of a surgical technologist program is required, or graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience.

• Certification as a surgical technologist required.

• LPN license required if graduate of LPN program.

• Must have at least 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech.

• Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

• Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
