Job description

Surgical Technologist II Downtown 90%- Labor and Delivery

Qualified candidates may be eligible for a sign-on incentive of up to $5,000. Current UI employees are not eligible.

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Duties to Include:

  1. Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
  2. Serves as primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns, or new staff.
  3. Serves on shared governance committee, POD committee, or EBP workgroup.
  4. Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
  5. Understands the principles of medical and surgical asepsis; recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique.
  6. Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants (E/I/S/I).
  7. Understands various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation to anticipate needs during surgery and improve flow.
  8. Performs delegated technical functions and clinical activities per institutional policies.
  9. Facilitates patient care considering the patient's condition and age.
  10. Collaborates with peers to make decisions related to surgical patient care, maintains sterile field, and reports incidents to the surgeon.
  11. Reviews pertinent patient information for accuracy and preparedness for procedures.
  12. Assists in revising or updating care plans and developing new ones for new procedures or surgeons.
  13. Organizes and reviews instrument trays and supply shelves.
  14. Maintains trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instrument items.
  15. Displays critical thinking and anticipates needs of patient and surgeon.
  16. Prevents and reports potential patient problems/complications and unusual incidents.
  17. Documents according to department standards in conjunction with the Registered Nurse.
  18. Performs computer functions within role scope.
  19. Precepts new staff and student technologists in scrubbing duties.
  20. Mentors new employees and surgical team members.
  21. Practices infection control precautions per institutional policy.
  22. Follows changes in patient care protocols based on research findings.
  23. Participates in staff meetings and in-service programs.
  24. Contributes to perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees.
  25. Performs other projects and tasks as assigned.
  26. Ensures completion of daily documentation/tasks, case reviews, and supplies.
  27. Communicates with surgeons regarding implants, instruments, or supplies for future cases.
  28. Organizes/revises specialty carts, care plans, or service line information.
  29. Provides specialty in-services.

Percent of Time: 90%

Schedule: Monday-Friday 1900-0730, Every 3rd weekend, Holidays on rotation

Location: Downtown Campus

Merit Pay Plan

Pay Differentials: Shift differentials for evening and night.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT).
  2. Two years of Surgical Technologist experience.
