Job description

We are searching for a Surgical Technologist — someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you will handle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during congenital heart surgery procedures, assisting the physician while performing related patient care duties in an age-appropriate manner as assigned by the circulating nurse (RN).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assist with the preparation of the CV operating room according to the needs and age appropriateness of the patient and the surgical procedure as evidenced by the following, but not limited to knowledge of surgical pathology as related to the planned surgical intervention.
  • Apply knowledge of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon, having supplies opened or readily available in a cost-effective manner as observed by the circulating nurse/nurse manager.
  • Seek the circulating nurse's assistance and reference the preference card when unable to decide about opening versus readily available.
  • Assist in the care and labeling of specimens 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse.
  • Acknowledge the importance of patient safety by participating in the Universal Protocol.
  • Scrub, and don gown and gloves in accordance with the Recommended Practices and within a reasonable time frame.
  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment and supplies by inspection, proper cleaning, care, and utilization according to company recommendations and the O.R. policy and procedures 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse.
  • Set up back table, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery and the service 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse/nurse manager.
  • Utilize basic technical skills to implement the plan of care as exhibited by identified unit-base competencies and skills with no more than 5 exceptions, excluding written counseling.
  • Prepare CVOR equipment and supplies while performing patient care related duties in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Communicate delays or changes in the schedule to the charge nurse promptly.
  • Implement safety measures that are appropriate to the developmental age.

As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, all successful candidates will be required to undergo respiratory fit testing in compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

Skills & Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an educational program for Surgical Technologists, which may include training programs in Surgical Technology offered by the Army, Navy, Air Force,Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service required.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist from one of the following:
    • CST-SUR: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
    • TSC-NCCT: National Center for Competency Testing
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, including experience in two or more surgical specialties, required.
  • Cardiothoracic Operating Room or Congenital Heart Surgery experience preferred.
