Participates in the delivery of individualized peri-operative registered nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care.

1. Basic knowledge of instrumentation.
2. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and ensures the team maintains a sterile environment.
3. Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentation passing techniques.
4. Participates in surgical counts (sponge, needle, and instruments), per policy.
5. Adheres to policies, procedures, all regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.
6. Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
7. Participates in unit educational activities.

What We Require:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Successfully completed an accredited surgical technologist training program and holds a current credential as a certified surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor. Alternatively, has completed a surgical technology training program during military service.

Experience: None required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Certification in Surgical Technology required. LPN licensure required for grandfathered employees. Obtain and maintain registration with the VA Department of Health Professions.

Life Support: Must obtain and maintain AHA BLS-HCP certification.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a structured orientation program.
