Job Description
Job Duties- Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile technique.
- Performs first scrub role on core cases of assigned services and anticipates the surgeon’s requests.
- Demonstrates basic anatomy related to procedures.
- Ensures all necessary items and equipment are in the room prior to case.
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection as evidenced by practice.
- Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
- Conducts accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to departmental policies in conjunction with RN.
- Understands and uses instrumentation/equipment properly considering maintenance, safety, and availability.
Department Specific Duties- Responsible for OR continuous readiness throughout shift.
- Assures that all specimens are correctly labeled and taken to lab/pathology in a timely manner.
- Performs scrub and/or surgical assist duties for cesarean sections, vaginal deliveries, and other obstetrical surgeries.
- Collaborates with Sterile Processing PRN to maintain optimal inventory of clean instruments.
- Maintains up-to-date physician preference cards for vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Assists with patient cares, including but not limited to: obtaining vital signs, giving newborn baths, performing newborn hearing screens, nursery observation, and circumcision assistance in Birthplace, NICU, and Pediatric area.
- Performs and documents patient rounds: asks about patient comfort and needs, removes trays, tidies rooms, assists to bathroom, etc.
- Participates in vaginal deliveries by setting up delivery tables, assisting with bed adjustments, and responds to requests by RN and physician; after delivery assists RN to clean the room as needed.
- Provides clerical support duties including patient admissions and telephone communications.
- Responsible for all quality control checks per unit policy including blanket and fluid warmers, glucometers, and medical gases.
- Participates in inventory control of supplies through expiration date, par level checks, and communication with authorized Birthplace personnel for ordering of supplies; stocks and rotates supplies as needed.
- Assures unit supply areas, carts, warmers, beds, and rooms are cleaned and stocked.
- Takes responsibility for reporting shortages and maintenance issues when observed.
- Other duties as assigned, including floating to other hospital departments.
- Performs Surgical Assistant duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Demonstrates knowledge of techniques used by various surgeons for various procedures.
- Maintains technical skill level and adapts to changes in surgical technique and operative intervention modalities.
- Demonstrates constructive approach during all interactions with staff and nurse manager toward the organization.
- Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by nurse manager.
Professional ExperienceEducation- Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program or equivalent experience required.
Licensure, Certification, Registration- Currently certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
Physical Demand Requirements- Heavy: Exert 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently.
