Purpose: Participates in an expanded role of perioperative First Assisting. Under the direction of the physician, assists in operations; may help set up operating room, prepare and transport patients for surgery, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon's assistants, wound closure, hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Responsibilities:

• Provide competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice as applicable to the STFA.
• Maintain regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
• Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
• Follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
• Incorporate evidence-based practice in quality and safety into daily work. Commit to high-quality, safe work; encourage others to do the same. Identify and address processes or systems that could lead to inefficiencies or safety issues. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety. Involve patients and families in safety processes. Report serious events/incidents per policy.
• Assist the surgeon during procedures, including positioning, prepping, draping, and providing hemostasis using electrocautery, vessel ligation, and other means as directed. Manage sutures appropriately and identify specific surgeon preferences.
• Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques relevant to procedures. Recognize and adapt to physician preferences and procedural steps.
• Act as a patient advocate, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
• Serve as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource for colleagues and healthcare professionals, including in robotic surgery.

Associates Degree in Surgical Tech preferred. 1 year of experience required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: CST Certification required. Completion of STFA program and certification within 2 years required, unless current STFA with extensive OR and First Assist experience. Additional certifications include BLS or CPR, Act 31, Act 33, Act 34, and FBI Clearance, all with renewal requirements.
