Surgical Technologist/FA - Invasive Cardiology - Full-Time Days

Join UPMC as a Surgical Technologist/FA - Invasive Cardiology - Full-Time Days.

Purpose: Participates in an expanded role of perioperative First Assisting. Under the direction of the physician, assists in surgeries, helps set up the operating room, prepares and transports patients, passes instruments and supplies, assists with wound closure, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and helps count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice as applicable to the STFA.
  • Maintain regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and education.
  • Follow all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practices into daily work, ensuring high quality and safety standards. Identify and report unsafe conditions or errors, and promote patient and family involvement in safety processes.
  • Assist surgeons during procedures, including patient positioning, prepping, draping, and providing homeostasis using electrocautery, vessel ligation, and other means as directed.
  • Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques; recognize physician preferences and procedural steps.
  • Act as a patient advocate, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • Serve as an educator, mentor, and resource to colleagues, especially in robotic surgery.

Qualifications: Associates Degree in Surgical Tech preferred; 1 year of experience required. CST Certification required, with completion of STFA program and certification within 2 years. Current STFA with extensive OR and First Assist experience may be exempt.

Certifications and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
