Job description

Purpose:

Participates in an expanded role of perioperative First Assisting. Under the direction of the physician, assists in operations; may help set up the operating room, prepare and transport patients for surgery, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon's assistants, perform wound closure, hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice as applicable to the STFA.
  2. Maintain regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
  3. Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
  4. Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  5. Incorporate evidence-based practices in quality and safety into daily work. Commit to high-quality, safe work; encourage others to uphold similar standards. Identify and address processes or systems that could lead to inefficiencies, unsafe conditions, errors, or adverse events. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety are maintained. Promote patient and family involvement in safety processes. Communicate proactively with other service partners to ensure high quality and safety. Report serious events or incidents according to policy.
  6. Assist the surgeon during operating room procedures, including positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient. Provide homeostasis using electrocautery, vessel clamping, coagulation, ligation, and other means as directed by the surgeon. Recognize and manage various suture needs and demonstrate appropriate suture management.
  7. Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques relevant to procedures. Recognize specific physician preferences and procedural steps.
  8. Act as a patient advocate, maintaining privacy and confidentiality of all relevant information.
  9. Serve as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to colleagues and other healthcare professionals regarding STFA activities and robotic surgery.
