About Duke Regional Hospital

Job Class Description
  • Surgical Technologists (ST) assist in preparing and caring for surgical patients from infancy to geriatrics under the direction of a nurse. They possess expertise in sterile technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to facilitate surgeries.
  • Technologists with dual roles in the operating room and ambulatory settings demonstrate competency in preoperative and postoperative patient care in the surgical clinic setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Level I - New graduate (up to 18 months of experience)
  • Perform responsibilities demonstrating Service Excellence towards patients, physicians, peers, and departments.
  • Uphold policies and procedures of the department and organization.
  • Establish and maintain sterile fields, demonstrate understanding of sterile technique.
  • Prepare OR with instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform safe instrument passing, sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
  • Maintain skills for a diverse patient population.
  • Take calls and rotate shifts as directed.
  • Additional ambulatory responsibilities include patient prep, assisting physicians, lab specimen collection, post-op instructions, and scheduling.
  • Must advance to Level II within 18 months.
Level II - Experienced technologist
  • Assist in training new technologists and students.
  • Serve as a role model and establish sterile fields independently.
  • Anticipate surgical team needs, demonstrate case preparation skills.
  • Communicate effectively and adhere to safety standards.
Qualifications
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or certified (NCCT or NBSTSA).
  • Military surgical technology training is acceptable.
Experience
  • Level I: Entry level, 0-18 months experience.
  • Level II: 6-12 months relevant experience.
Certifications
  • BLS required for both levels.
Skills and Abilities
  • Adaptability to unit changes, effective under stress, knowledge of anatomy and instrumentation, prioritization skills, and response to life-threatening situations.
