Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health’s NEBH ambulatory surgery center at 1 Brookline Place seeks a Certified Surgical Technologist for a full-time day shift. You will help prepare the OR, pass instruments, and assist the surgical team before, during, and after procedures to ensure aseptic technique and efficient turnover.

Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist certificate.
  • Heart Saver certification required within 60 days of hire date from the American Heart Association or Red Cross.
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative case management: preparing the OR, gathering tools and supplies, counting items, and assisting the surgical team as they enter the sterile field.
  • During the intraoperative phase: passing instruments and equipment to the surgeon, handling specimens, preparing medications, and assisting with dressings.
  • Postoperative management: maintaining the sterile field until patient transport, removing used instruments, maintaining equipment, and preparing the OR for the next patient.
  • Assist the Materials Manager with supply inventory.
  • Assist the RN with Physician orders as directed.
  • Demonstrate solid communication skills.
  • Gather procedure‑appropriate supplies for each surgery.
  • Update surgeon preference cards as needed.
  • Report missing or malfunctioning equipment to the RN.
  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with room setup and turnover time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Preoperative case management: preparing the OR, gathering the necessary tools and supplies, counting out the necessary items, and assisting the surgical team as they enter the sterile field
  • During the intraoperative phase: passing instruments and equipment to the surgeon as needed, taking care of specimens, preparing medication, and assisting with dressings
  • Postoperative management: maintaining the sterile field until the patient is transported, removing used instruments, caring for and maintaining the equipment, and preparing the OR for the next patient
  • Assist the Materials Manager with the maintenance of the supply inventory
  • Assist the RN as directed with Physician orders according to patient needs
  • Demonstrate solid communication skills
  • Gather needs procedure‑appropriate supplies for each surgery
  • Update surgeon preference cards as needed
  • Report missing or malfunctioning equipment to the RN in a timely manner
  • Operate equipment required to perform the job in a safe, efficient manner
  • Assist the RN in facilitating speed and efficiency with room set‑up and turnover time
  • Perform sharp, instrument and sponge count with the RN according to policy
  • Dispose of sharps and hazardous materials according to policy. Utilize PPE.
  • Clean the OR with appropriate disinfecting agents
  • Wash and reprocess instrumentation according to established standards and ASC policy
  • Open surgical supplies, set up sterile fields, maintain sterile field using aseptic technique and identify any break in sterile technique
  • Accurately label medication in the sterile field; account for and verify amounts, reporting totals to the surgeon and RN circulator
  • Maintain knowledge of commonly used local anesthetics, antibiotics, and topical hemostats
  • Obtain appropriate syringes and needles for use
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and request appropriate supplies prior to immediate need to expedite the procedure
  • Organize storage area for instruments and supplies under the direction of the Materials Manager and demonstrate cost containment in the use of equipment and supplies

  • Participate in the development and implementation of ASC policies and OR standards of care

  • Assist in orienting new employees
  • Takes initiative to share knowledge and skills willingly with colleagues, students and novice practitioners in a collegial manner
  • Provide leadership as a resource person, willingly providing information to improve patient care at ASC
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and take personal accountability for patient safety
  • Ensure proper identification of patient when providing care in accordance with NEBH identification policies and procedures
  • Adhere to infection control standards, including hand hygiene, room assignment, isolation precautions, aseptic/sterile techniques, and universal standard precautions
  • Clean equipment in accordance with NEBH and departmental policies, procedures and standards
  • Utilize and adhere to proper procedures for handling and disposing of bio‑hazardous materials
  • Participate in hospital and/or unit‑based patient safety and quality activities and use principles to support and improve patient outcomes and efficiencies
  • Participate in staff meetings and in‑services, accurately maintaining education file
  • Maintain required certifications and competencies without reminder; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy

Pay Range

$34.50 – $51.27 per hour. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
