Summary
The surgical technologist is a healthcare professional who is an integral part of the team providing surgical care to patients. They work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and maximum patient safety.

Surgical technologists are experts in asepsis and sterile techniques, combining knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical tools to assist physicians during invasive and diagnostic procedures.

Typical Schedule
Monday through Friday; Day hours; Call required

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an operating room technician program or military operating room training; minimum of 2 years of varied operating room scrubbing experience required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • National Board Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of operating room experience preferred.
Responsibilities Include
  • Donning OR attire and PPE.
  • Gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment needed for surgery.
  • Performing surgical scrub and donning gown and gloves.
  • Setting up sterile fields with instruments, supplies, and medications.
  • Performing initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts.
  • Assisting with gowning, gloving, draping, and establishing the sterile field.
  • Participating in surgical site and patient verification during the timeout procedure.
  • Preparing and passing instruments, supplies, and medications during surgery.
  • Maintaining sterile technique and assisting with room prep and cleanup.
