What you’ll do:

Responsibilities/Duties:

  1. Assist the RN in implementing a care plan for the patient in the Operating Room.
  2. Perform scrub duties under the supervision of the RN.
  3. Maintain strict Aseptic Technique.
  4. Anticipate surgeon’s needs and provide instruments, supplies and equipment safely and efficiently.
  5. Organize and maintain instrumentation and supplies.
  6. Provide patient safety in all aspects of job activities.
  7. Monitor use of counted items (sponges and sharps), assist the circulating nurse in counting and alert the nurse to any discrepancies.
  8. Follow standard precautions and infection control policies.
  9. Set up the OR Room before the case – wipe down surfaces, assemble and check equipment for proper functioning and availability.
  10. Open supplies for procedure using strict aseptic technique.
  11. Assist in positioning the patient.
  12. Assist in transporting patients to the OR and ensuring their comfort.
  13. Assist in cleaning and turning over the room, including bringing the table down to the decontamination room.
  14. Break down table.
  15. Check inventory and equipment, report shortages and defective equipment to the appropriate personnel.
  16. Perform proper decontamination, and processing of instrumentation for sterilization following AAMI standards.
  17. Prepare supplies and equipment for the procedure.
  18. Stock ‘wall closet’ supplies and warming closet.
  19. Check case carts.
  20. Pull case carts for the next day procedure.
  21. Copy daily schedule and distribute.
  22. Obtain drugs from Anesthesia work room.
  23. Prepare the procedure room for the day with necessary supplies and equipment.
  24. Maintain and monitor supplies to ensure availability.
  25. Assist in transporting patients.
  26. Ensure a safe patient environment.
  27. Interact with patients and ensure their comfort.
  28. Assist with different procedures (i.e.; radiofrequency).
  29. Have working knowledge of medications used by physicians.
  30. Turn room over after cases and prepare for following procedure.
  31. Prepare room for following day.
  32. Clean and stock Anesthesia Cart when necessary.
  33. Maintain supplies – place, receive orders and put stock away.
  34. In the absence of the Lead Tech, may interact with sales personnel regarding supplies, maintain equipment and send out for repair/exchange, file booking sheets and ensure necessary supplies/equipment are available for cases one week in advance, and ensure PO pricing is accurate.
  35. Decontaminate instruments and equipment.
  36. Sterilize equipment according to manufacturers’ guidelines and AAMI guidelines.
  37. Wrap instruments and fold towels.
  38. Clean stretchers and make them up with fresh linens.
  39. Assist PACU Scheduling Coord. by putting charts together and affixing stickers.
  40. May be asked to help prepare the wet lab for demonstrations.
  41. Ensure equipment and supplies needed for the demo are available and in good working order.
  42. Use Universal/Standard Precautions in handling demo room specimens and instrumentation.
  43. Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an approved, surgical technologist certification program.
  2. Must have one to three years’ operating room experience. Experience within an ambulatory surgical center a plus. Experience with orthopedics required.
  3. Working knowledge of office equipment and Software.
  4. Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures, and other regulatory policies.
  5. Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol and professional etiquette.
  6. Understanding of electronic medical systems.
  7. Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills (i.e. using expressive vocabulary that communicates a complete and detailed message, avoiding spelling errors, employing a respectful tone).
  8. Ability and interest in learning procedures and software functionalities that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of individual and department efforts.
  9. Organized, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  10. Interprets, adapts and applies guidelines and procedures appropriately.
  11. Ability to develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by demonstrating empathy and tact.
  12. Promotes teamwork through collaboration, represents the practice in a professional manner, and maintains the strictest confidentiality on all patient issues.
