Position Details
Full Time | 10 hr shifts + On Call, Holiday/Weekend Rotation
Summary
Provides patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Performs duties that support the operation of the nursing unit. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives.
Responsibilities
- Provide age-appropriate patient care considering growth, developmental phase, and age-related factors such as thermal regulation, nutrition, safety, and infection prevention. Use resources for patients with special needs such as language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, cultural and religious needs.
- Integrate infection control and prevention principles into practice.
- Use standard precautions and personal protective equipment to protect against blood borne pathogens. Follow aseptic and sterile techniques. Respect patient dignity and confidentiality, especially in the Operating Room.
- Review policies and procedures, and utilize references for completing job duties.
- Prioritize and organize work effectively within the assigned shift. Perform procedures within the scope of the Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Demonstrate competency in the scrub role for assigned surgical procedures.
- Participate in the patient’s care plan under RN supervision.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.
- Coordinate with the circulating nurse to meet the surgical team’s needs.
- Manage and operate surgical instrumentation responsibly.
- Assist in cleaning and decontamination procedures after cases.
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Collaborate with surgeons to ensure cost-effective use of supplies and minimize waste. Properly identify and utilize surgical instrumentation.
- Check sterile supplies for packaging, sterility, and expiration dates.
- Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts as per policy, and correct discrepancies.
- Handle all specimens and cultures carefully and accurately.
- Use proper body mechanics when moving patients and equipment.
- Communicate effectively with the RN and care team, especially during hand-offs.
- Maintain a cheerful and professional demeanor. Report and clarify information as needed. Notify charge nurse when leaving the unit.
- Accept assignments and work as a team member.
- Use communication tools like meeting minutes and emails to stay informed and improve performance.
- Continuously develop knowledge through practice, observation, and continuing education.
- Support quality patient care and promote innovation and creativity.
- Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff.
- Accept constructive feedback and demonstrate improvement.
- Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, appropriate for healthcare settings.
- Follow the Operating Room dress code.
- Attend departmental training and external conferences to enhance skills.
- Support organizational programs such as SCIP, iCare Values, and Magnet standards.
- Maintain good attendance and punctuality according to hospital policies.
- Ensure equipment is in working order and used appropriately.
- Perform duties to maintain survey readiness and quality initiatives, including equipment checks and cleanliness.
- Complete assigned tasks like errands, stocking supplies, and answering phones.
- Support patient care programs, including maintaining a quiet environment and excellent customer service.
- Participate in staff meetings regularly.
- Keep the patient care area organized and clean.
Credentials
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (Required)
Education or Experience
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- Graduate of Surgical Technician Program (Required)
