Job summary

OakLeaf Surgical is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team. You will facilitate sterile technique, prepare equipment, and assist the surgeon under supervision, ensuring patient safety throughout procedures.

Responsibilities include maintaining sterile fields, assisting with instruments, and upholding HIPAA and infection control standards. This role involves 36 hours per week in a 0.9 FTE arrangement and may require flexible scheduling.

Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.
  • Surgical Technologist certification is preferred.
  • BLS certification is required upon hire.
  • Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Must possess a cell phone compatible with the organization’s secure messaging system.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for patients’ rights and tailor care to individual needs.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and patient confidentiality.
  • Check supplies and equipment needed for procedures.
  • Open sterile supplies and set up sterile table with instruments, equipment, and medications/solutions.
  • Initiate pre-procedural Time Out to prevent wrong-site/wrong-procedure/wrong-patient errors.
  • Ensure infection control protocols and safety standards are followed.
  • Anticipate additional supplies needed during procedures.
  • Gown and glove surgeon and assistants; pass instruments to surgeon.
  • Assist with instrument handling, suction, and dressing preparation.
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist in room prep for subsequent patients.

Job description

The Surgical Technologist is an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

  • .9 FTE - 36 hours per week
  • 12 hour shifts - Hours are variable

Essential Job Functions:

  • Advocate for patients’ rights, preferences, and needs, ensuring that they receive high-quality, compassionate care that is tailored to their individual circumstances
  • Project a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of the patient, coworkers, and the organization, as appropriate
  • Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
  • Open sterile supplies and sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
  • Ensure compliance with Universal Protocol by initiating a pre‑procedural 'Time Out' to prevent wrong‑site, wrong‑procedure, and wrong‑patient errors
  • Ensure infection control protocols and safety standards are followed in all aspects of patient care
  • Anticipate additional supplies needed during the procedure
  • Gown and glove surgeon and assistants
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
  • Sponge or suction operative site
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders
  • Cut suture material as directed by the surgeon
  • Connect drains to suction apparatus
  • Prepare and apply sterile dressing
  • Pass instruments to surgeon during procedure
  • Operate the retinal laser under the direction of the physician, adhering to all safety protocols and maintaining annual competency through required training
  • Maintain highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
  • Assist in prepping room for the next patient
  • Keep accurate records throughout the procedure and communicates them to circulator
  • Properly label and care for specimens taken during surgery, ensuring correct handling and documentation
  • Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assist other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
  • Promptly report and document any occurrences of unusual events, safety concerns, or incidents in accordance with organization policies and procedures
  • Participate in the department’s on‑call rotation and respond promptly to call‑ins to ensure continuous patient care and surgical support as needed
  • Use the organization's secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
