Job summary

Children's Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs is seeking a Senior Surgical Technician to provide experienced intra-operative support for a wide range of pediatric procedures. Qualifications

  • Education: Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers required at hire; NBSTSA/NCCT certification may be considered.
  • Colorado DORA Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration.

The Senior Surgical Technician provides experienced intra-operative support to surgeons and Registered Nurses (RNs) during surgical and invasive procedures. This role demonstrates proficiency in surgical workflows, maintains a strong working knowledge of instrumentation and sterile technique, and helps ensure efficient case preparation and turnover. In addition to clinical duties, the senior technician supports the orientation of new staff, contributes to team-based projects, and upholds established standards of safety and patient care.

The Operating Room at Children's Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs is a Level II Trauma Center with 4 OR units and a procedure room that treats children and adolescents. The unit currently supports more than 13 different surgical specialties and performs more than 6,300 cases annually. Our unique yet impressive team is comprised of bachelor's prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe, quality care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, including abdominal, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, ENT surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties, promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. We promote continued education and encourage staff to pursue specialty certifications. Department Name: Colorado Springs Operating Room
Job Status: full time, 40 hours per week, eligible for benefits
Shift: nights (2045-0715), four 10-hour shifts per week, Monday through Thursday

This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supports room turnovers and set‑ups, ensures adequate stock of supplies, manages restocking, and uses non‑case time efficiently to support department operations and quality initiatives.
  • Models professionalism, reliability, and collaboration to promote a positive team culture.
  • Contributes to patient safety by engaging in surgical time‑outs, properly labeling field medications, confirming patient weight and allergies with the RN before medication handoff, ensuring effective hand‑offs during relief, and selecting appropriate instruments based on procedure and patient needs.
  • Assists with patient positioning and verifies specimen labeling and handling according to protocol.
  • Remains vigilant for potential safety risks, such as sharps or burn hazards, and takes preventive action.
  • Applies standard precautions and safely manages biohazardous materials using appropriate PPE.
  • Prepares for procedures using preference cards, scrubs all assigned cases, opens correct supplies, and anticipates the surgical team’s needs throughout the case.
  • Provides informal precepting and guidance to new team members to support onboarding and clinical development.
  • Contributes to in‑service training by assisting with demonstrations or sharing procedural updates.
  • Participates in department‑ or organization‑wide initiatives, including committees and project work.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology
Experience: Two years of general OR experience
Equivalency: Graduate of a military training program in surgical technology or a Diploma in Surgical Technology with a surgical technologist certification may be considered in lieu of an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology.
Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire. NBSTSA or NCCT Certified Surgical Technologist
Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $29.75 to $44.63
