Position Title:

Surgical Technician (Non Certified or Certified) - Endoscopy

Department:

Advanced Endoscopy

Job Description:
  • *The Surgical Technician position is available non-certified or certified, depending on experience and education.*

General Description:

Under immediate to general supervision, provides technical assistance as a surgical (scrub) technician in an operating room, labor and delivery, or other facility performing surgical procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed here are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.

  1. Learns to use Physician's preference cards to assist in preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure.
  2. Prepares sterile field by opening instruments and supplies using sterile technique.
  3. Performs the surgical scrub prior to the patient entering the room on all procedures.
  4. Assists in preparing the operative field by assisting the physician in draping the patient.
  5. Preserves and ensures correct identification of operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
  6. Obtains special equipment such as electrosurgical machines and diagnostic lights, ensuring they are in working order.
  7. Manipulates instruments to aid the surgeon's efficiency and avoid hazards to the patient.
  8. Observes the progress of surgery and provides additional instruments, supplies, or other items as needed.
  9. Recognizes and corrects breaks in sterile technique.
  10. Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as directed by the circulating nurse.
  11. Cleans or sterilizes contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies; cleans operating room areas; disposes of soiled linen.
  12. Assists in training surgical technicians.
  13. If assigned to the Labor and Delivery unit, may perform a variety of clerical and technical direct patient care activities.
Minimum Qualifications (Non Certified):
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians OR
  • Experience: 0-1 year of scrub technician experience for the completion of training. Eligible to sit for the national exam by the Association of Surgical Technicians.
  • License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s): Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
Minimum Qualifications (Certified):
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians OR
  • Experience: 0-4 years of relevant experience. Eligible to sit for the national exam by the Association of Surgical Technicians.
  • License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s): Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy and first-aid methods and practices.
  • Skill in maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development over the lifespan, and assessing patient data to meet individual needs.
General Responsibilities:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
