Job summary

Kettering Health Network in Beavercreek seeks a Surgical Technologist First Assistant to support the surgeon during complex procedures and help maintain the sterile field.

The role requires a Surgical Technology graduate, First Assistant certification, BLS, and at least 2 years OR experience; licensure in Ohio is required.

Responsibilities

• Insert trocars and instruments; secure drains; apply splints and casts as directed.
• Work under the surgeon's direction and according to credentialing committee privileges.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Surgical Technologist First Assistant (STFA) is responsible for providing assistance to surgeon and under his/her direction and supervision. The STFA participates in the care of the surgical patient with primary emphasis on the intraoperative phase of care. The STFA assists the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of care by maintaining hemostasis, utilizing the Electro-surgical unit, clamping, cauterizing, ligating, and suturing tissue. The STFA maintains visualization of the surgical field through manipulation and retraction of tissue. The STFA inserts trocars and instruments, handles body tissue, and sutures including the closure of tissue planes. The STFA secure drains and apply splints and casts. The STFA functions as an extension of the surgeon at the sterile field during robotic procedures. The ability to perform all surgical activities including but not limited to those listed above, are based on the granting of privileges by the Board of Directors at the recommendation of the Chief of Surgery and the Medical Staff Credentialing Committee.

Minimum EducationGraduate of approved school of Surgical Technology.Successful completion and documentation of a Surgical First Assistant Program as set forth by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA), or other approved accrediting body.
