Job summary

St. Luke's University Health Network is seeking a surgical technologist to support sterile preparation, instrument handling and theatre duties in a fast-paced operating room.

The role involves maintaining strict sterile technique, assisting surgeons, and ensuring patient safety throughout procedures. Minimum on-the-job training is provided with a focus on proficiency in instrument handling, counts and team coordination.

Qualifications

• Certification required upon hire (NJ/PA).
• New graduate must obtain certificate within six months of hiring date.
• Certifications include NCCT or NBSTSA with renewal cycles.

Responsibilities

• Prepare sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications for procedures.
• Assist with draping and passing instruments to surgeon during procedures.
• Maintain sterile field and assist with counts before incision and after closing.
• Handle surgical specimens and sharps following safety policies.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
• Scrubs, gowns, and gloves self and members of the surgical team
• Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure and ensures they are in good working condition
• Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
• Assists with draping sterile field
• Passes instruments, retractors and suture etc., to surgeon during procedure
• Demonstrates ability to anticipate need of the surgical team
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
• Handles surgical specimens appropriately and safely
• Handles sharps and mediations following OR safety policies

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

• Sit up to 1 hour per day. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; possibly 6 hours at a time. Walk up to 8-10 hours per day; up to 2 hours at a time. Continuously required to use manual dexterity for handling and twisting/turning. Consistently lift and carry objects up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds; frequently push objects up to 100+ pounds (i.e., camera carts, microphones, storage carts, etc.). Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must have the ability to move and respond quickly. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision. Depth perception necessary. Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

Education/License :

• NJ Requirement: Certification required upon hire.
• PA Requirement: Certification required upon hire, unless new graduate.
• A New Graduate, requires certificate within six (6) months of hiring date.
• Acceptable certifications include one of the following:
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) - 1 year renewal cycle
  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - 2 year renewal cycle

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

On-the-job training - minimum of 1-1/2 years, with 8 weeks concentrated orientation period.
