Job description

Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Sign-On Bonus: $10,000

The primary purpose of your role is to perform a variety of duties in an operating room to assist the surgical team.

Delegation of Authority

Under the direction of the Clinical Coordinator of the Operating Room or designee, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Job Functions

1. Ensure sterile condition of the OR suite and of sterile equipment, instruments, and supplies.
2. Change into operative clothing, scrubs, and sterile gown and gloves.
3. Arrange sterile setup for operation, including instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
4. Pass instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon and surgical assistant, maintaining the sterile field.
5. Assist with sponging, suction of operative site, and retractor positioning.
6. Assist the circulating nurse in patient preparation and draping.
7. Assist the anesthesiologist during anesthesia induction.
8. Adjust lights and equipment as directed.
9. Assist in moving the patient to the recovery room and back to the nursing unit as needed.
10. Participate in cleaning the operating theater post-operation, including disposal of linen, gloves, instruments, and waste.
11. Assist in counting sponges, needles, and instruments during and after surgery.
12. Prepare operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
13. Share pertinent data with team members.
14. Maintain specialty and preference cards for surgical service physicians.
15. Record data on patient data sheets as required.
16. Sterilize instruments and equipment following established procedures.
17. May perform duties on nursing units as a nursing assistant.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator.
19. Be fully accountable for work, call, and behavior.
20. Identify learning needs and pursue self-growth opportunities.
21. Attend mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings.

Education Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Meet at least one of the following criteria:
  • Completed a surgical technology program and certified or to be certified within 12 months.
  • Employed as a surgical technologist prior to July 1, 2013.
  • Completed military or public service surgical technologist training.
• Experience in operating room techniques, with at least one year of on-the-job training.
