Job summary

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center is hiring a Certified Surgical Technician. This role supports the surgical team during all phases of procedures, ensures equipment readiness, and maintains sterile techniques across multiple OR environments.

The position requires formal Surgical Technician training, professional certification, and BLS. Prior OR experience is preferred, with duties spanning Endoscopy and anesthesia-related support, along with ongoing education and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Completion of formal Surgical Technician program required.
• Certified surgical technologist credential is required from a recognized organization.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.
• At least one year experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Discusses plan of care with assigned team each morning (including anesthesiologist).
• Assists in scrub on all surgical procedures under the circulating RN.
• Set up procedure room 15 minutes prior to scheduled time and check equipment.
• Assist with Endoscopy procedures (EGD, Colonoscopy, ERCP, PEG, Bronchoscopy, TEE).
• Orders and maintains anesthesia supplies with Director of Anesthesia.
• Document OR records and sterilization processes; manage supplies and inventory.
• Follow sterilization procedures and monitor chemical/biological processes.
• Participate in meetings, continuing education and mandatory trainings.
• Maintain unit meetings attendance and uphold customer service standards.

Job Duties

Discusses plan of care with assigned team each morning (including anesthesiologist) to identify and correct problems; assists in the preparation of the patient pr, intra, and postoperative phases as schedule permits.

• Demonstrates competence to scrub on all types of surgical procedures; performs tasks requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of the circulating RN.
• 2,6 Assists in setting up the room for procedure at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by the circulating nurse of PCM; checks all equipment/instruments prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning; assembles needed supplies using preference cards.

Assists with all Endoscopy procedures (i.e. EGD, Colonoscopy, Endoscopic Rectograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP), Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) & Bronchoscopy, & TEE).

Assist with Electroconvulsive Therapy procedures and special projects as assigned.

Orders and maintains anesthesia supplies (including carts) working closely with the Director of Anesthesia and/or designee in identifying other anesthesia needs.

Compiles and processes O.R. records into logbook, processes sterilization records and anesthesia log as appropriate.

Orders O.R. materials from Central Supply and Storeroom regularly; keeps assigned Procedure Rooms and carts stocked with supplies; checks expiration dates of OR supplies/packages and instrumentation.

Follows written procedures for sterilization (steam sterilization and Steris machines); knows the responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.

Participates in meetings, continuing education, in-service programs and educational workshops as required (mandatory and yearly hospital and departmental educational plans).

Attends monthly unit meetings.

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education

High school graduate or equivalent.
Completion of formal Surgical Technician program required.

Certification

Certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization required.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.

Experience

At least one year preferred.

JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

O.R.; Frequent contacts with patients, surgeons and other staff.
Utilizing correct body mechanics while standing and/or walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying medium to heavy equipment with close visual attention and intense concentration.
Exposed intermittently to humidity variations, odors, fumes, blood, excreta and confined quarters.

Salary commensurate with experience within posted range.

$32.34 to $42.39 PER HOUR PLUS DIFFERENTIALS EVENING $2.65 PER HOUR, NIGHT $2.65, WEEKEND $2.00
