The Surgical Technician (ST) provides high-level care by assisting with age-specific surgical procedures, practicing principles of surgical asepsis, identifying breaks in the sterile field, and ensuring appropriate action is taken. They anticipate the needs of the surgical team, promote efficient flow of the operative procedure, serve as a resource for the specialty area, and function effectively in multiple areas. The ST follows policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines, utilizing interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism. They contribute to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
Completion of a surgical technician course is required. No prior experience is necessary.
The candidate demonstrates basic competencies for surgical technician duties, applies theoretical concepts to practice, and continually expands their knowledge and clinical skills, particularly in surgical and procedural technician duties. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation is required. The candidate exhibits professional behavior, maintains a cooperative attitude, works calmly under pressure, and responds courteously. Must be able to speak, read, and write legibly in English (Spanish preferred), use necessary computer software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical records), troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment, perform technical and supportive patient care activities, and communicate effectively. Additional skills include being assertive, collaborative, able to accept direction, think critically, work independently, perform basic math, manage multiple tasks, organize and prioritize workload, problem-solve, recall information accurately, and pay attention to detail. The ability to distinguish colors and smells, discern temperature variances through touch, hear sufficiently, and see adequately to read screens and documents is also required.
Surgical Technician certification is preferred and may be obtained through AST (Association of Surgical Technologists) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing). Basic Life Support certification is required.
