Summary
Surgical Technician is an integral member of the surgical team, providing assistance to surgeons and other team members during various surgical procedures ranging from local anesthesia cases (biopsies and excisions) to vascular and microsurgery, including ear, hand, facial, and vascular reconstruction. The technician must be adaptable to new procedures in a changing surgical environment, participating in planning and implementing complex procedures under the supervision of the surgical team.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of 07/03/2025. Qualification can be based on experience and/or education as detailed below:
- Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): For Health Aid and Technician Series (0640), supporting duties to medical or health personnel across various specialties, requiring application of relevant knowledge, methods, and techniques.
- Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06, including assisting in operating rooms, handling technical medical instruments, maintaining sterile fields, recognizing complications, operating sterilization equipment, and implementing infection control procedures.
- Education: One year of graduate education directly related to the position, or a combination of education and experience.
Duties
- Serve as the primary scrub person during surgeries such as thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, and joint replacements.
- Set up sterile fields with all necessary equipment including specialized surgical tools and devices.
- Plan and prepare for unique and complex surgical equipment needs.
- Ensure functioning of all surgical equipment and proper lighting.
- Coordinate with surgical professionals to ensure availability of supplies and equipment prior to procedures.
- Maintain sterile surgical setups and environment, and assist in patient positioning and draping.
- Assist during surgeries by handing instruments, maintaining sterile technique, and recognizing surgical needs and complications.
- Handle specimens properly, perform sponge and instrument counts, and ensure the accountability of all surgical instruments and equipment.
- Support training of residents, students, and new staff in surgical procedures and equipment operation.
- Transport patients safely within the surgical environment, monitoring for hazards and maintaining patient safety.
- Perform non-technical maintenance of surgical equipment and manage inventory and supplies.
- Continuously update knowledge on new surgical procedures and equipment, and participate in quality improvement activities.
Work Schedule: Day shift with on-call and weekend requirements. This position is not virtual.
