Job summary

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is seeking a Surgical Technician to provide technical care for patients in the assigned unit, supporting medical care under the direction of medical staff and nursing supervision. The role entails delegating care and reporting to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse.

The position requires adherence to aseptic technique, universal precautions, accurate handling of instruments and specimens, and coordination with the surgical team to ensure patient safety throughout

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED, sterile technique training preferred.
  • Certification preferred; ability to read, write and follow procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and speak intelligible English; communication with staff.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication; patient safety mindset.
  • Adaptable to a fast-paced surgical environment and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes aseptic technique and maintains sterile conscience.
  • Accurately gathers instruments and supplies for all assigned cases.
  • Uses universal precautions including protective eye wear.
  • Performs surgical counts accurately when applicable.
  • Handles and labels specimens per policy.
  • Communicates clearly with surgical team members, circulator, physician.
  • Participates in Universal Protocol practices as appropriate.
  • Prepares OR and disposes of instruments after procedures.
  • Ensures equipment and instrumentation are available for emergencies.
  • Utilizes unit-specific equipment safely (Autoclave, microscopes).
  • Sets up the operating room prior to surgery and checks equipment.
  • Passes instruments to surgeons during procedures.
  • Assists with moving the patient to the OR and positions on the table.
  • Post-procedure cleaning of the OR and re-sterilization of surfaces.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Provides technical care for patients within assigned unit of hospital in support of medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital the Surgical Technician is responsible for delegated care for all patients assigned to himher by the RNSUPERVISION Reports directly to Nurse Manager andor Charge Nurse

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Utilizes principles of aseptic technique and maintains sterile conscienceAccurately gathers appropriate instruments and supplies for all assigned casesUtilizes universal precautions including protective eye wearPerforms surgical counts accurately when applicableHandles and labels specimens according to policyCommunicates clearly and appropriately with other surgical team members circulatorphysicianActively participates in Universal Protocol practices as appropriateFollowing surgical procedure readies surgical suite and properly disposes of instrumentsIs knowledgeable of procedures and prepares for potential emergencies by assuring equipment and instrumentation is availableUtilizes unit specific equipment safely and appropriately Autoclave microscopes etcIncorporates healthy workforce in daily practiceCall is required for this positionSets up the operating room prior to surgeryChecks surgical machines and equipmentPasses instruments to surgeons during surgeryAssist with moving the patient to the operating room and position them on the operating tableAfter the operation is complete helps clean the operating room ensures re sterilizing of all equipment surfaces and materials used during the procedure The above statements are only meant to be a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job The incumbents may be requested to perform job related tasks other than those stated in this description

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

High School graduate or GED Sterile technique training preferredCertification preferredBasic computer skillsAbility to read write and speak intelligible English; Ability to communicate with employees vendors and other medical personnelCapable of clear and succinct verbal and written communications; Possess a high level of patience and tenacity; Capable of rapid problem identification and resolutionRequires emotional stability and maturity; Must be adaptable to change be decisive and demonstrate foresight; Exhibits organizational and leadership ability
