Job summary

Southern Illinois Healthcare in Carbondale, IL seeks a Surgical Technologist to prepare the operating room and patient for procedures, assemble and dismantle tables and instruments, and assist the surgeon with gowning, passing instruments, and maintaining counts.

Responsibilities include equipment decontamination, efficient turnover of the OR, patient transport support, specimen handling, and ensuring room readiness for planned procedures, with compensation commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

• Graduate of OR technician program or on-the-job/military training with verifiable evidence.
• Certified Surgical Technologist NBSTSA or NCCT.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Assists in transportation and positioning of patients
• Assembles and dismantles tables and instruments before and after procedures
• Prepares patient and room for planned surgical procedures
• Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures
• Completes skin preparation and draping
• Assists Surgeon with gowning and gloving
• Passes instruments and sutures to the surgeon
• Maintains correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges
• Applies dressings and bandages as needed
• Assists in collecting and caring for specimens
• Decontaminates instruments and supplies per policy
• Aids in efficient turnover of the OR for next cases
• Monitors and restocks supplies

• Non-Certified: Graduate of OR technician program, accredited through ARC/STSA or on the job training; military experience as technician or LPN; dental assistant; ophthalmologist technician; medical assistant. All on the job training or military must show evidence of training by training facility, physician in charge or military command officer.
• Certified: Successfully pass the Certified Surgical Technologist exam through NBSTSA or NCCT
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate

Experience and Skills

• Technical Experience: 6 months or specialized training for non-certified or on the job and military training
