Job summary

Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital is seeking a Surgical Tech I/II to maintain an orderly surgical field, pass instruments swiftly to the surgeon, and support sterile technique across procedures. You will collaborate with RNs and surgeons to ensure efficient case flow and patient safety.

Ideal candidates have a surgical technology training program or equivalent, and current BLS certification. Four years of surgical tech experience may be substituted by CST credentials or related experience,

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Surgical Technology training program; or Orlando Health training program.
• Four (4) year surgical tech experience; CST with two years may substitute for the required experience.
• Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an orderly surgical field and pass instruments quickly to the surgeon.
• Anticipate and prioritize needs during procedures.
• Count sponges, needles, and instruments as required.
• Preserve and identify surgical specimens for pathology.
• Assist in ordering and stocking specialty supplies.
• Collaborate with a Registered Nurse as SME for at least one tertiary specialty.
• Provide scrub services for major procedures in two specialties.
• Prepare and train others on specialty procedures.
• Precept perioperative staff rotating through scrub roles.
• Collaborate with surgeons to address case needs.
• Support workflow improvements with clinical leadership.
• Transport items, equipment, and medications around the facility.
• May have limited access to medication storage areas.
• Maintain regular, punctual attendance per policies.
• Maintain compliance with Orlando Health policies.
• Inventory and order specialty instruments per directions.
• Participate in clinical orientation of SPD staff.
• Perform Surgical Tech duties reliably and support career development.

Education

High school graduate or equivalent

Surgical Technology training program; or Orlando Health training program

A Brief Overview

Demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.


• Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.


• Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.


• Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.


• Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines


• In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.


• Provides scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction).


• Prepares and conducts technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.


• Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.


• Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.


• In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.


• Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.


• May have limited access to areas storing medications.


• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.


• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.


• When directed by clinical specialist, inventories and orders specialty instruments, supplies unique to specialty.


• Participates in the clinical orientation of SPD staff, serving as a role model and technical resource.


• Dependable and reliable in performance of Surgical Tech I and II duties.


• Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective participates in departmental performance improvement activities, meets education and certification requirements, upholds Orlando Health philosophy and objectives, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
