Job summary

Orlando Health in Florida is seeking a Surgical Tech I/II at Sebastian River Hospital to maintain sterile fields, hand instruments to the surgeon, and support complex procedures across specialties.

You will collaborate with nurses and surgeons, participate in counts, manage supplies, and help train perioperative staff while upholding Orlando Health's commitment to quality and patient safety.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Surgical Technology training program; or Orlando Health training program.
• Four years surgical tech experience; CST and two years may substitute.
• Current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an orderly surgical field and pass instruments to the surgeon efficiently.
• Anticipate and prioritize instrument and supply needs during procedures.
• Participate in sponge, needle and instrument counts as required.
• Preserve surgical specimens for pathology evaluation.
• Assist in ordering and stocking specialty supplies under direction.
• Act as a technical SME for at least one tertiary specialty with RN collaboration.
• Provide scrub services for major procedures in at least two specialties.
• Precept perioperative staff and support workflow improvements.

Responsibilities

What you will do

• Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
• Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
• Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
• Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.
• Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines
• In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
• Provides scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction).
• Prepares and conducts technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
• Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.
• Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
• In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
• Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
• May have limited access to areas storing medications.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
• When directed by clinical specialist, inventories and orders specialty instruments, supplies unique to specialty.
• Participates in the clinical orientation of SPD staff, serving as a role model and technical resource.
• Dependable and reliable in performance of Surgical Tech I and II duties.
• Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective participates in departmental performance improvement activities, meets education and certification requirements, upholds Orlando Health philosophy and objectives, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
