Job Summary:

A First Assistant Practitioner must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to function as a first assistant under the supervision of a Surgeon. The employee is a specially trained surgical technologist who demonstrates the skills, knowledge, and judgment required for the assistant role. The position requires on-call responsibilities and will be assigned accordingly.

Education:

• Required: Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist School, Completion of First Assistant Course
• Preferred: Experience as a Surgical Technician in the operating room

Experience:

• Required: Documentation of skills and knowledge to perform the First Assistant role in surgery
• Preferred: Two (2) years' experience as a Surgical Technician

Position Requirements:

• Required: Successful completion of the First Assistant certification exam
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, maintained regularly

Department Position Summary:

The First Assistant Practitioner must demonstrate the ability to function as a first assistant under supervision, demonstrating skills, knowledge, and judgment. Responsibilities include Endo Vascular Vein Harvest techniques when involved with Cardiac/Vascular procedures. The individual must understand growth and development principles, assess patient data, and interpret information to meet age-specific needs. Evaluation is through direct observation, skills labs, peer reviews, or self-assessment.
