Job Description

The Surgical First Assistant Coordinator, under the guidance of the primary Surgeon, is responsible for the care and treatment of patients in the Operating Room. In terms of the surgical technologist's responsibility, the individual prepares operating rooms and assists surgeons.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina, is a 355-bed acute care hospital, 81-bed Behavioral Health facility, and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

Essential Functions

1. Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies.
2. Ensures good working order of equipment and instruments.
3. Performs the role of the scrub technician.
4. Uses principles of aseptic technique to establish and maintain a sterile field.
5. Facilitates efficient completion of the surgery schedule.
6. Maintains organized work area and participates in daily unit duties. Maintains a clean, safe, comfortable, and organized work area free of clutter.
7. Competent in at least 3 specialty areas.
8. Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
9. Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
10. Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
11. Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.
12. Participates with interviews of prospective new hires for their service line.
13. Ensures that cart checks are completed monthly and outdated supplies are removed.
14. Assists with promoting staff development, assessing educational needs.
15. Encourages ideas from the team and works collaboratively with them on implementation when feasible.
16. The Lead will promote positive team dynamics and work to improve the patient experience.
17. Demonstrates skills in sterile technique and maintaining the sterile field.
18. Demonstrates a working knowledge of surgical instruments and their applications.
19. Provides orientation for new staff members as needed or assigned.
20. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
21. Proven ability to work as part of a team, in a fast-paced environment.
22. Supports and maintains a culture of safety, quality, and positive patient experience.
23. Working knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, CMS, National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs), HIPAA, and continued readiness related to healthcare or hospital standards.
24. Assesses and evaluates the organization of supplies, equipment, unit needs, and initiates changes as deemed necessary, working with departmental staff and leadership. The lead will also follow up on changes until fully implemented.
25. Contributes to policy development and updates.
26. Environmental Rounding - ensures that equipment and department is clean and items are in good repair.
27. Notifies nursing leads of needed items and repairs.
28. Uses Standard Precautions at all times.
29. Uses principles of aseptic technique in various situations.
30. Initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
31. Inspects sterile items for integrity before opening or delivering to sterile field. Verifies presence and appropriate color change of chemical indicators in all loads.
32. Maintains sterility while opening sterile packages.
33. Communicates maintenance of sterile field.
34. Follows surgical attire policy.
35. Sterile setup is ready prior to patient arrival in OR.
36. Instruments, sutures, and other sterile items are passed to the surgeon in an efficient manner.
37. Sterile field is maintained in an organized manner.
38. Physician’s needs are anticipated and delivered in a timely manner.
39. Sponge, needle, and instrument counts are carried out per policy and in an efficient manner to prevent need for recounts.
40. Instruments are prepared for terminal cleaning at the end of the procedure.
41. Medications are received on the sterile field per policy.
42. Receives and handles surgical specimens according to policy.
43. Surgeon’s preference cards are used to accurately pull required supplies for cases. Special equipment and supply needs are anticipated and requested as soon as possible prior to the scheduled time of surgery.
44. Room turnover is achieved in a minimal amount of time.
45. The patient is on the OR table at least 10 minutes before scheduled induction time. Additional time is allotted for patients requiring extensive positioning, surgical prep, and/or draping.
46. Clinical Coordinator/Scheduling Coordinator receives notice when unanticipated developments that will affect the schedule occur.
47. Organizational skills and effective time management are developed and demonstrated on a daily basis by using downtime efficiently to perform necessary tasks such as pulling cases, assisting coworkers, giving breaks and lunches, and straightening unit.
48. Assists in moving and positioning patients while maintaining privacy.
49. Returns unused supplies to proper location at end of case(s). Stocks room at end of case(s) according to established par levels.

Minimum Education

1. Graduate of an approved program for surgical technicians or graduate of a military training program in surgical technology with a high school diploma or GED.
2. Certification in BLS.
3. Surgical Technician Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical First Assisting Program (SFA) Certified as a Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA).
