Job summary

Trinity Health’s Family Birth Center in Minot, ND seeks a Surgical Technician to support obstetric procedures, including cesarean deliveries, and to assist with daily Labor & Delivery operations.

You will maintain sterile technique, prepare instruments, stock supplies, and provide clerical support to ensure safe, efficient patient care within a fast-paced surgical unit; CST or nursing licensure is preferred on hire.

Position Summary:The Family Birth Center, Surgical Technician provides direct support during obstetric surgical procedures, including cesarean sections, while also assisting with daily operational tasks within the Labor & Delivery unit. This dual role includes maintaining sterile techniques during surgeries, preparing and organizing surgical instruments, stocking supplies, and performing clerical support tasks to help ensure efficient workflow and patient safety. The role ensures proper handling of equipment and supplies, contributes to infection prevention practices, and supports accurate count procedures and documentation in accordance with established surgical protocols. Working closely with nurses, physicians, and other members of the care team, the Surgical Technician plays an important role in maintaining a well-coordinated surgical environment focused on safe, high-quality patient care. As part of a collaborative Labor & Delivery team, this role relies on clear communication, mutual support, and shared accountability to help maintain smooth surgical operations, while contributing to an organized unit environment that supports optimal patient outcomes and dependable departmental workflow.Key Responsibilities:Prepare and maintain sterile surgical fields for labor and delivery procedures.Select, assemble, and organize surgical instruments and supplies according to physician preference and procedure requirements.Assist surgeons and nurses during operative deliveries by passing instruments and maintaining aseptic techniques.Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and storage of instruments post-procedure.Respond promptly to emergency situations in the labor and delivery unit.Stock and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment in patient rooms and surgical suites.Perform clerical tasks such as chart preparation, order entry, and documentation support.Transport patients, specimens, and equipment as needed.Assist nursing staff with patient care tasks.Maintain cleanliness and readiness of labor and delivery rooms.Licenses and Certifications Required:Requires either a Surgical Tech or Certified Surgical Tech (CST) and UAP/Technician upon hire; or current or temporary nursing license in ND or compact nursing license.Practice/Employment does include orientation (preference given to CST)CNA certification preferredEducational Requirements:Requires either a Surgical Tech training program or a Nursing program, as evidenced by licensure.Experience Requirements:Preferred past work experience, but not required.Special Skills or Training Requirements:Maintains familiarity with all instrumentation, including proper care and knowledge of functionality.Communicates well with others, handles stressful situations well, and works as an efficient member of the team.Completes probation period satisfactorily.Basic computer and clerical skills required.Knowledge of sterile technique and surgical instrumentation required.Physical Requirements:The Surgical Tech is frequently required to stand for prolonged periods, move throughout the operating suite, and assist with positioning or transferring patients and equipment. The role requires the ability to lift, push, and maneuver surgical trays, instrument sets, and mobile equipment. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are essential for identifying instruments, responding to verbal cues, and performing fine motor tasks within a sterile field.Environmental Requirements:Work occurs in a fast-paced surgical environment with regular exposure to bright lighting, surgical equipment, bodily fluids, sharp instruments, and sterilizing chemicals. The role may involve urgent or high-stress situations requiring rapid, accurate responses. Adherence to infection-prevention practices, sterile-technique standards, and appropriate use of PPE is required to ensure safety for patients and staff.
