Job summary

The Surgery Department at Penrose Hospital is seeking a Certified Surgical Tech for the Heart Team in Colorado Springs. You will support complex cardiac procedures by preparing and passing instruments, maintaining sterile technique, and assisting with patient movement and room turnover.

Required: current surgical technology certification, BLS, and Colorado DORA registration for Colorado-based staff; NBSTSA or NCCT certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• Completion of an approved Surgical Technician program.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Colorado DORA registration as Surgical Technologist for Colorado-based roles.
• NBSTSA or NCCT certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Set up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications for the procedure.
• Maintain sterile technique and verify package integrity during surgery.
• Assist in passing instruments, retractors, sponges, and ensure proper exposure.
• Perform counts with circulator before incision and as needed.
• Prepare back table and mayo stand per surgeon's preference card.
• Prepare solutions and medications used during cases.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Certified Surgical Tech, Heart Team, you will work under the supervision of the surgeon and RN, bringing specialized cardiac surgical expertise to support complex, high-stakes heart procedures.

Every day, you will arrange and inventory sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies for cardiac surgical cases, passing items to surgeons and nurses as needed throughout the procedure. You will also assist in preparing and moving patients, along with sterilizing and cleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms between cases.

To be successful in this role, you will need current surgical technology certification, specialized knowledge of cardiac surgical instrumentation and procedures, strong attention to detail, and the ability to perform with precision and composure in a high-acuity surgical environment.

• Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure.
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure by checking package integrity, indicators and opening procedures.
• Holds retractors or instruments, sponges or suctions operative site, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suction apparatus and applies dressings to a wound.
• Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation, before incision is closed and as needed.
• Prepare back table and mayo stand anticipating needs of the surgeon and through the use of the surgeon's preference card.
• Prepares solutions and medications used.

Job Requirements

Required

• High School Diploma/G.E.D.
• Completion of an approved Surgical Technician program.
• Current Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association
• Current registration with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) as a surgical technologist for associates working in Colorado.
  • A person performing Surgical Tech functions within the scope of another Colorado license, certification, or registration does not need to register as a Surgical Tech.
• Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Preferred

• One (1) year of experience in a surgical setting
• Experience in a specialty field

The Surgery Department at Penrose Hospital has 16 OR suites and performs 30 – 40 cases per day. We specialize in heart, vascular, general, gynecology, urology, ortho, spine, neuro, plastics, robotics, and trauma procedures on adult patients only.
