Job summary

Pardee UNC Health Care in North Carolina seeks a certified Surgical Technologist to assist the surgeon under the direction of a physician or registered nurse, maintaining the sterile field and anticipating the needs of the operating team.

The role involves preparing the OR, assembling supplies, draping, gowning, assisting with instruments, labeling specimens, and supporting sterile processing and debriefing activities, with a weekend schedule and onsite work.

Qualifications

• Candidate must be a graduate of a Surgical Technology program.
• Certification NBSTSA or NCCT is required.
• BLS certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and stages the OR and environment for procedures.
• Gathers, checks, opens supplies and equipment for procedures.
• Stands sterile field, assists with gowning/gloving and setup.
• Performs dexterous tasks during surgery under supervision.
• Labels and hands off specimens as appropriate.
• Cleans and sterilizes instruments; preps OR for next case.
• Participates in debriefing and quality improvement activities.
• Precepts and orients new staff and students.

Summary:
Under the direction of a physician and/or a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist, Certified handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure and uses understanding of the procedure being performed to anticipate and assist with the needs of the surgeon. This role requires the knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and stages surgical environment / operating room (OR) for the performance of surgical procedures.
• Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
• Stages sterile surgical field with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for surgical procedure.
• Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
• Performs manually dexterous tasks and assistance during surgical procedures under the direction of the attending surgeon.
• Prepares, labels and hands off specimens as appropriate.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
• Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
• Precepts entry-level staff, students and orients new colleagues as assigned.

Required

• Graduate from a Surgical Technology program
• National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
