Job summary

Corewell Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room by preparing the surgical suite, handling instruments intraoperatively, and maintaining a sterile field throughout procedures.

The role emphasizes knowledge of surgical procedures, attention to case costing, and collaboration with surgeons. A certified Surgical Technologist with an accredited program and BLS certification is preferred; preceptorship may be offered.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent from an accredited school.
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA or ARC is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides sterile instruments and supplies during the surgical procedure.
  • Performs surgical sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Prepares case tables with necessary equipment, sterile supplies, instruments and medications/solutions for each surgical case.
  • Assists in positioning patients for surgical procedures and maintains a protective position throughout the case.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile and safe environment.
  • Engages with surgeons to optimize instrument sets and reduce waste.
  • Contributes to case costing discussions with surgeons and EMIs to identify cost-saving opportunities.

Is responsible for maintaining knowledge of surgical procedures and principles related to those procedures. May serve as a preceptor.

Essential Functions
  • Provides sterile instruments and supplies during the surgical procedure.
  • Performs surgical sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Prepares case tables with necessary equipment, sterile supplies, instruments and medications/solutions for each surgical case.
  • Assists in positioning patients for surgical procedures and maintains a protective position throughout the case.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile and safe environment.
  • Takes an active role in preference card building and management through communication with surgeons and EMIs
  • Engages with surgeons to make suggestions regarding instrument sets (i.e. streamlining sets by removing instruments, combining sets, adding instruments that are always opened separately, etc)
  • Actively engages in case costing by talking with surgeons regarding product usage, connects with EMIs to make cost savings suggestions, makes suggestions on how to eliminate waste on cases
Qualifications
Required
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent. Completion of an Accredited School of Surgical Technology. Not all schools involve an Associate's Degree
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required Or
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross 90 Days required
Preferred
  • Surgical Technologist Experience (Clinical rotations do count as experience)
