Job summary

UVA Health is seeking Surgical Support Technicians (SST) for the Main OR to support one of the busiest perioperative environments. The role emphasizes instrument setup, patient transport, and collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia providers.

Entry-level friendly with onboarding and on-the-job training; BLS required within 2 months of hire. This position offers exposure to a nationally recognized academic medical center and paths into perioperative careers.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year of clinical or hospital experience preferred.
• BLS within 2 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Set up and break down operating rooms to ensure readiness for each surgical case.
• Clean and disinfect OR surfaces and equipment following infection control standards.
• Sort and dispose of contaminated materials per hospital guidelines.
• Transport patients to and from Surgery while providing comfort and observing safety needs (Main OR only).
• Stock supplies, maintain equipment, and support efficient room turnover.
• Work cooperatively with the surgical team in a high-acuity, time-sensitive environment.

This is a hands-on, mission critical role for individuals who thrive in fast paced clinical settings and want to be directly involved in surgical care, even without prior OR experience. As an SST, your work ensures operating rooms are safe, ready, and fully supported so surgical teams can focus on what matters most: the patient.

This role is ideal for candidates looking to launch or grow a perioperative career while gaining exposure to advanced surgical services in a nationally recognized academic medical center.

The Role

At UVA Health, Surgical Support Technicians are respected members of the perioperative team, working alongside surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and technologists to keep surgery running safely, efficiently, and on time.

Minimum Requirements

Education

HS Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

0 years of experience (1 year preferred)

Licensure

BLS within 2 months of hire. CNA or EMT preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 25-50lbs. Working in environment with fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
