Job summary

Grady Health System in Atlanta is seeking a Surgical Support Technician (SST) to serve as a nurse extender across OR, GI, PACU, Pre-op, and Anesthesia. The SST partners with physicians, nurses, and staff to support clinical operations and ensure a safe environment for patients.

Responsibilities include transporting patients, assisting with positioning, room turnover, equipment readiness, and adherence to safety, infection prevention, and FCOT standards.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with RNs, Charge Nurses, CSMs, and other perioperative team members to provide clinical and operational support within the OR, Pre-Op, PACU, GI Lab, and ASU.
• Serves as an ancillary extension of the clinical team to facilitate efficient patient flow and departmental operations.
• Transports patients safely throughout the perioperative continuum (OR, Pre-Op, PACU, GI areas) following safety and infection prevention standards.
• Assists with patient positioning, transfers, lifting, and use of specialty positioning devices.
• Performs room turnover activities including cleaning, disinfection, equipment setup, and ensuring procedural readiness.
• Sets up procedural/operating rooms by assembling tables, preparing equipment, verifying gases, and conducting readiness audits.
• Decontaminates and transports surgical and GI equipment per infection prevention standards.
• Manages removal and transport of instrument trays and carts to Sterile Processing.
• Maintains environmental cleanliness and safety in perioperative areas; handles hazardous waste per regulations.
• Supports maintenance, storage, and availability of clinical equipment to ensure timely case starts.
• Implements Lockout/Tagout procedures per Environment of Care standards.
• Replaces oxygen tanks and maintains equipment towers across perioperative departments.
• Participates in equipment training and competency validation to ensure safe operation and quality outcomes.
• Supports FCOT performance and room turnover metrics.

Job Summary

The Surgical Support Technician (SST) serves as nurse extender (OR, GI, PACU, Pre-op, Anesthesia) through the provision of care across the continuum to provide optimal safety and partnering with physicians, nurses, others to support clinical operations of the department. Provides a safe environment for patients, physicians, and staff by accessing patients for transports, providing on hand clinical transports, maintains safety with clinical equipment, supplies, and positioning and lifting for patients in the OR/Pre-op/PACU/GI/Anesthesia clinical settings including specialty devices for safety and optimal clinical outcomes and metric goals. Assists in core supply areas, OR room/GI/PACU/Pre-op turnovers, and promotes a clean, sanitary, orderly Perioperative environments. Ensures safe delivery of pathology specimens. Performs regulatory compliance audits under the direction of CSM's and Directors of Perioperative Services. The SST reports to charge nurses, CSM's, and Directors. Other positions that report to CSM are certified surgical technologist, GI technicians, RN's, charge nurses, and ward clerks.

Job Responsibilities

• Collaborates with Registered Nurses (RNs), Charge Nurses, Clinical Staff Managers (CSMs), and other members of the perioperative team to provide clinical and operational support within the Operating Room (OR), Pre-Operative (Pre-Op), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Gastrointestinal (GI) Lab, and Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU).
• Supports patient care activities by serving as an ancillary extension of the clinical team, performing duties as assigned to facilitate efficient patient flow and departmental operations.
• Transports patients safely throughout the perioperative continuum, including OR, Pre-Op, PACU, and GI areas, while adhering to established safety, infection prevention, patient identification, and documentation standards.
• Assists clinical staff with patient positioning, transfers, lifting, and the use of specialty positioning devices to promote patient safety and optimal procedural outcomes.
• Performs timely and efficient room turnover activities in accordance with departmental performance metrics, including cleaning and disinfecting patient care areas, disassembling surgical tables, preparing equipment, and ensuring procedural readiness.
• Sets up procedural and operating rooms by assembling surgical tables, preparing equipment, verifying medical gases, conducting room readiness audits, and ensuring compliance with First Case On-Time (FCOT) expectations.
• Decontaminates and transports surgical and GI equipment to designated locations following procedures, ensuring proper handling and compliance with infection prevention standards.
• Manages the removal and transport of instrument trays, surgical case carts, and equipment to Sterile Processing and decontamination areas to support efficient patient care operations.
• Maintains environmental cleanliness and safety throughout perioperative areas, including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous and regulated waste in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Supports the maintenance, storage, and availability of clinical equipment and supplies to ensure timely case starts, efficient room turnovers, and uninterrupted patient care.
• Implements and monitors Lockout/Tagout procedures for equipment requiring repair or maintenance, ensuring compliance with Environment of Care (EOC) standards and promoting a safe work environment.
• Replaces oxygen tanks and maintains equipment towers and related clinical equipment to support operational readiness across perioperative departments.
• Participates in ongoing equipment training and competency validation to ensure the safe assembly, inspection, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of surgical and procedural equipment while reducing the risk of patient harm.
• Supports departmental goals related to patient safety, infection prevention, environmental safety, operational efficiency, First Case On-Time (FCOT) performance, and room turnover metrics.
