Job summary

Paylocity is seeking a Surgery Nurse Manager to oversee Surgical Services including the Holding Area, Operating Rooms, PACU, Out-Patient Surgery, Endoscopy, and Central Supply. In collaboration with the Chief of Surgery, you will ensure ongoing assessment of patient care quality by practitioners and promote clinical competency among nursing staff.

You will coordinate staffing, scheduling, budgeting, and equipment needs, participate in hospital committees, and drive performance improvement

Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years clinical practice in provision of Surgical services with emphasis on leadership and management experience.
• Current verification of competence in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Responsibilities

• Guides, directs and plans the organization and coordination of the department's activities with responsibility for the assessment of the quality and efficiency of these activities in accordance with standards of care.
• Coordinates scheduling of surgical procedures in the Operating Room to ensure staffing, space, equipment and support for services; manages staff time requests and department schedules.
• Assists in departmental and hospital committees; ensures staff development programs and communication with Nursing Administration on issues; develops and implements operational standards for the surgery department.

II. POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Surgery Manager assumes responsibility for the efficient functioning in Surgical Services which may include the Holding Area, Operating Rooms, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Out-Patient Surgery Unit, Endoscopy Unit and Central Supply. In collaboration with the Chief of Surgery, this individual is responsible for the on going assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in these areas by practitioners.

The Surgery Nurse Manager coordinates the provision of services under the surgical services, functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the nursing staff with a focus on promoting clinical competency, and assumes responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided by the Surgery Department. Makes and implements decisions regarding activities in area of responsibility based on Hospital administrative standards, Human Resource standards, Department of Nursing standards, and Unit standards and the Chief of Surgery or the Director of Patient care services in unusual situations.

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Ensures that the mission and objectives are maintained for areas of responsibility with interpretation of these objectives to staff when necessary. Guides, directs and plans the organization and coordination of the department’s activities with responsibility for the assessment of the quality and efficiency of these activities in accordance with AORN, ASPAN and JCAHO standards of care.

• Assesses requirements of patient care and department needs to coordinate assignment of nursing staff to meet required services in each area. In collaboration with the medical staff, coordinates scheduling of surgical procedures in the Operating Room to ensure that there is available staff, space, equipment and support for provision of required services. Coordinates time requests and schedules for staff assigned to the Surgery Department. Provides continuous employee assessment with written evaluations at designated intervals and as required based on employee performance. Maintains responsibility for budget formulation and control for the department with particular emphasis on maintaining appropriate surgical equipment/supplies in accordance with the needs of the medical staff and the hospital.

• Actively participates in appropriate departmental and hospital committee and ensures that all personnel are involved in this process, inclusive of staff development programs to enhance professional growth of personnel. Maintains communication with Nursing Administration regarding potential or actual problems or concerns with particular emphasis on Medical staff issues. Coordinates with the staffing coordinator for nursing staff issues. Develops, interprets, implements operational standards for the surgery department to promote the maintenance of good quality patient care with focus on the rights of the patient in the surgical setting including consents, privacy, confidentiality of information and other ethical considerations.

• Supervises overall nursing care performance and maintenance of quality of patient care. Ensures that all patient assessment and reassessment with corresponding data are completed in a timely manner. Responsible for completeness of all required reports to Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Committee report and other such report, with assistance from the surgical staff if needed. Assumes responsibility for the administrative and technical supervision and orientation of all nursing personnel assigned to the department.

• Possesses sound knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures utilized in the different areas of the department, thus able to assist the nursing staff when needed. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide direct patient care in relation to growth and development relative to age-specific needs. Possesses thorough knowledge of specialized equipment operation to provide for direct care and for supervision of others in the safe and effective operation of this equipment in the designated clinical setting with adaptation of the use of this equipment to all age groups served in areas of responsibility.

• Defines and implements on going performance improvement activities for areas of responsibility which correlate to Performance Improvement Program with involvement of all levels of personnel. Actively participates in hospital and departmental committees and group meetings with a focus on providing input regarding improving the quality of patient care services. Assists in housekeeping of the department, when needed.

IV. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

V. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical activity – exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light to medium work.
