Job Description
This role provides fundamental care and services to the patient, family, and the unit environment. The scope of service encompasses patient safety, customer service, and providing a safe and clean environment for the surgical patient.
Responsibilities
General Duties
- Ensures O.R. remains clean, free of clutter, and that necessary supplies and equipment are available and acceptable.
- Proper cleaning, care, and placement of essential equipment needed for scheduled cases, e.g., arthroscopy pump, fluoroscopy beds, video equipment, overhead tables.
- Ensures orderliness and efficiency in:
- Cleaning utility areas, hallways, restrooms, equipment, shelves, cart racks, scrub sinks.
- Stocking: checks equipment and supplies, updates outdated supplies, stocks work areas and O.R. rooms with supplies (gloves, needle boxes, etc.).
- Checks and records refrigerator temperatures, makes adjustments as needed, reports repairs.
- Supports errands such as Blood Bank, Central Service, Pathology, X-Ray, etc., while on duty.
- Transports specimens as directed by the RN.
- Assists with positioning and moving patients from bed to stretcher per RN instructions.
- Transports floor patients to O.R., demonstrating sound judgment and understanding hospital codes.
- Removes unneeded equipment and returns it to proper storage.
- Performs surgical shave preps as needed per guidelines or surgeon preference.
- Assists circulating nurse with tying sterile gowns and with surgical preps and extremity holding under RN supervision.
- Prepares case carts from Central and delivers them to the correct O.R. room before scheduled start time.
Communication
- Shares pertinent patient information.
- Maintains open communication regarding patient care needs among team members and departments, e.g., isolation precautions, oxygen needs, EKG monitoring, patient limitations.
- Reports observations/data to appropriate team members (R.N., AAC, surgeon).
Leadership
- Demonstrates leadership skills such as motivating, educating, and mentoring peers.
- Acts calmly and rapidly during emergencies, providing necessary items as called for by the team.
- Participates in unit meetings, in-services, and educational programs when on duty.
- Adheres to standards of personal appearance and conduct, including dress code and core values.
- Follows chain of command.
Productivity
- Maintains order and efficiency per AORN standards to minimize case turnaround times.
- Displays flexibility and accepts changes in assignments.
- Uses time, equipment, and supplies responsibly to understand fiscal responsibility.
Safety
- Reports maintenance needs and stocks supplies according to standards.
- Ensures beds and stretchers are positioned for patient safety.
- Practices infection control, including hand hygiene, aseptic technique, and waste disposal.
- Corrects or reports hazards, knows fire safety equipment locations, handles spills, and responds promptly to emergencies.
- Handles oxygen tanks safely.
- Ensures patient consent is signed and records are signed off.
- Understands sterile techniques.
