Job summary

100 LCMC Health seeks a Surgical First Assistant to support exposure, hemostasis, closure and intraoperative tasks under supervision, with preoperative and postoperative duties to enhance patient care.

You will collaborate with the surgical team, assist with wound closure, dressings and drainage, and participate in volume replacement as appropriate. Licensure and NSAA/SA-C certification are required.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree from an accredited Surgical First Assist program.
• Valid license as an RN, LPN, or PA if applicable.
• NSAA certification or SA-C through ABSA.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, assists with positioning the patient and visualization of the operative site.
• Utilizes techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
• Selects and applies wound dressings and assists with securing drainage systems.
• Participates in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate under direct supervision.
• Works as a team player in support of the department and hospital’s strategic goals.

Job description

The Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the assistant performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. All activities are performed under direction and supervision, in accordance with LCMC policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations.

• Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
• Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings and assists with securing drainage systems to tissue.
• Participates in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate under direct supervision.
• Works and acts as a team player in support of the department and hospital’s strategic goals.

Qualifications

• 5‑7 years of supervised experience in surgery and institutional training in the field of surgical technology.
• Diploma or degree from an accredited Surgical First Assist program.
• Valid license as an RN, LPN, or PA if applicable.
• Certification through the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) or Surgical Assistant‑Certified (SA‑C) through the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA).
