- GENERAL SUMMARY
The Surgical Assistant Specialty Coordinator works under the direction and supervision of a surgeon and collaborates with the health care team members to facilitate optimal outcomes for patients undergoingsurgical procedures. This position performs pre-operative, intraoperative and postoperative technical functions to assist the surgeon. The Surgical Assistant Specialty Coordinator responsibilities include but are not limited to utilizing the appropriate techniques for positioning and preparing the patient for surgery, providing visualization of the operative site, assisting with hemostasis, volume replacement or auto transfusion as well as assisting with the closure of body planes. Reports to department leadership.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides age-appropriate preoperative assessment and postoperative evaluation of care.
- Applies the appropriate wound dressings and aids in securing drainage systems to tissue.
- Assists with the sterilization and preparation of equipment and supplies.
- Follows all hospital policies related to surgical procedures and the disposal of contaminated items.
- Participates in the design, coordination, education, evaluation and/or implementation of programs related to patient care programs.
- Reviews Operating Room (OR) schedules and routinely interacts and communicates with the surgeons to ensure all resources are available for cases as needed in their specialty area.
- Responsible for the planning, organizing and procurement of OR supply inventory; maintains appropriate supply levels for operating room.
- Collaborates with hospital staff on OR charging system.
- Works closely with department management to establish departmental goals and objectives for supply management.
- Serves as a preceptor to ensure staff is oriented to their service specialty.
- Participates in plans for growth of services.
- Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to ensure critical information is relayed throughout the perioperative period.
- Maintains proficiency in technical and professional skills.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- Required Licenses and/or Certifications
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training designation is required at time of hire or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
- Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
- Licensed Surgical Assistant in the State of Virginia preferred.
- Certified Surgical Assistant by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Required Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited surgical assistant program required.
- At time of hire, a record of completion for all education, licenses, training and/or certifications is required.
- Continuous re-certification and/or maintenance of state licensures, certifications, training, educational and application requirements is required during employment.
- Preferred Education and Experience
- Two years or more surgical assistant experience preferred.
- Pediatric experience preferred.

- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques.

- Possesses strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills as well as, the ability to interact with and build collegial relationships with diverse individuals.
- Demonstrates skills necessary to effectively communicate clinical data to physicians and other health care providers.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Surgical area work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
