Job summary

Proficio Surgical Assistants is seeking a full-time Surgical Assistant to join our team in the Greater Houston area. In this role, you will provide essential support to surgeons during procedures by preparing the operating room, assisting with patient care, and maintaining safety protocols.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on surgical experience, strong knowledge of surgical technology, and a commitment to teamwork and high-quality patient care. Certifications as a Surgical Assistant are required.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Operating Room practices and patient safety standards.
  • Hands-on experience in Surgical Assisting and intraoperative tasks.
  • Knowledge of the use, handling, and maintenance of surgical instruments.
  • Foundational understanding of relevant Medicine and perioperative care.
  • Ability to respond calmly in urgent situations.

Responsibilities

  • Support surgeons during procedures with hands-on assistance.
  • Prepare the operating room and ensure sterilization and organization.
  • Assist with patient positioning and retraction as directed.
  • Document clinical information and collaborate with surgical teams.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge and participate in ongoing training.

Role Description

This full-time, on-site Surgical Assistant role is based in the Greater Houston area. The Surgical Assistant will support surgeons and operating room teams during procedures by providing hands‑on assistance with pre‑operative preparation, intraoperative tasks, and post‑operative responsibilities. Day‑to‑day duties include preparing the operating room, ensuring instruments and equipment are sterilized and organized, positioning patients, and assisting with retraction, hemostasis, suturing, and wound closure as directed by the surgeon. The role also involves adhering to strict aseptic and safety protocols, documenting relevant clinical information, and collaborating with surgeons, nurses, and other perioperative staff to support efficient, high‑quality patient care. The Surgical Assistant is expected to maintain current clinical knowledge, participate in ongoing training, and contribute to a culture of teamwork and respect.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Operating Room practices and protocols, including aseptic technique and patient safety standards.
  • Hands‑on experience in Surgical Assisting, including assisting with exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and other intraoperative tasks under surgeon direction.
  • Knowledge of Surgical Technology, including the use, handling, and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Foundational understanding of Medicine relevant to surgical procedures, anatomy, physiology, and perioperative patient care.
  • Competence in Sterilization processes and infection prevention, including instrument processing, handling, and storage.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Surgical Assistant (e.g., CSA, CSFA, SA‑C) as required by state and facility regulations.
  • Prior experience in an acute care hospital or surgical center preferred, especially in high‑volume or specialized surgical services.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and position patients and equipment safely, and respond calmly in urgent or emergent situations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain professionalism in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical program; advanced certifications and continuing education are a plus.
