Description:

• GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides perioperative patient care, specifically in the intraoperative phase, in both the scrub and circulating roles according to established guidelines. Serves a diverse patient population from neonate to geriatric. This position requires call, weekends, nights, and holidays as scheduled.

• ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Scrubs and circulates on cases independently, with minimal direction.
  • Prepares for surgical cases efficiently, anticipating needs of the patient, surgeon, anesthesia, and other OR team members.
  • Provides a safe environment by implementing aseptic techniques and managing physical and psychological aspects of the environment.
  • Collects and analyzes data to assess patients and develop nursing diagnoses.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, staff, physicians, and families.
  • Maintains knowledge of equipment setup and function.
  • Initiates and directs room cleanup and turnover.

• MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Assists in maintaining physician's preference cards and other OR resources.
  • Utilizes computer systems for surgical documentation, specimen disposition, and obtaining relevant information.
  • Participates in departmental Performance Improvement activities.
  • Attends department meetings and in-services.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
• Operating Room experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support certification within six weeks of hire, from bodies such as the American Heart Association.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training within three months of hire.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
