University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital seeks a nationally respected, accomplished, board-certified pediatric surgeon to serve as the Surgeon-in-Chief. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead at a moment of significant institutional investment and strategic growth in pediatric surgical services.

The Surgeon-in-Chief serves as the senior physician executive responsible for strategic leadership, integration, and advancement of pediatric surgical and perioperative services across inpatient and ambulatory settings. The role oversees quality and safety, perioperative operations, faculty leadership, and programmatic growth aligned with Rainbow’s mission and academic priorities. The Surgeon-in-Chief will manage surgical staff performance, resource allocation and program expansion in coordination with hospital, and system leadership.

The Surgeon-in-Chief will report directly to Marissa Kiefer, President of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s and UH MacDonald Women’s Hospitals, and work in collaboration with department chairs and system leadership to recruit faculty and advance pediatric surgical programs. The role includes both clinical and administrative responsibilities and carries an academic appointment through the candidate’s respective department at Case Western Reserve University. While research and education are led by the department chairs, the Surgeon-in-Chief will support the training of students, residents, and fellows and help foster clinical and translational research initiatives across Rainbow.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be a visionary, collaborative leader with a proven track record in pediatric subspecialty leadership and experience navigating complex academic health systems. The ideal candidate is an innovative problem solver who can build on Rainbow's strengths while advancing strategic priorities. Candidates must hold an MD, DO, MD-PhD, or equivalent degree; be board-certified in a pediatric surgical subspecialty; be eligible for Ohio medical licensure; and qualify for an academic appointment at Case Western Reserve University.

The Organization

Rainbow’s pediatric surgical services include Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric General Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, and Urology, supported by a team of nine pediatric anesthesiologists. Together, these programs perform approximately 7,300 surgeries and GI procedures annually.

Compensation Opportunity Statement

The salary range for this role is dependent on clinical specialty of the candidate, and the salary range will be benchmarked against national market data and will be approximately the median for base pay.
