Job summary

Kentucky National Guard is seeking a Surface Maintenance Mechanic (Title 32, WG-5801-10). The role conducts troubleshooting, maintenance, and major repairs on heavy‑duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles.

You will remove and replace components, overhaul systems, perform readiness inspections, and ensure proper servicing of vehicles and equipment. Applicants must meet minimum and specialized experience requirements and be willing to accept any rank reduction as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum requirement: experience with routine maintenance tasks and using common tools.
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: 18 months diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying complex vehicles and systems.
  • Experience documenting work with dates and hours; resume must reflect complete details.

Job description

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC - TITLE 32, Position Description Number PDD1194000 and is part of the KY FMS 8, National Guard.

Major Duties
  • As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC - TITLE 32, WG-5801-10, you will troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles. Troubleshoot, repair and overhaul major systems. Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures. Remove and disassemble engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and systems. Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems. Conduct readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and equipment. Perform operational inspections and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly serviced. May maintain and repair equipment to include removing and replacing components and elements. Perform other duties as assigned. Military Grades: E4 - E8 RANK REQUIREMENT: Member must provide in writing with their application package that they are willing to accept a reduction in rank in order to be qualified for this position, if applicable. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: You must maintain membership in the Kentucky National Guard. You must be assigned to a compatible military position. Wear of the military uniform. Position may require a pre-employment physical. May be subject to furlough actions. May be required to successfully complete a trial period. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Must obtain and maintain a favorable adjudication of a T3 or equivalent investigation. Acceptance of a Federal position may terminate a military bonus. Acceptance of a Federal position will terminate Tricare Reserve Select (TRS) eligibility. This position is located on a tobacco free facility. This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT: Experience which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 18 months experience diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and more complicated systems. Experience which has provided a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment. Experience applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems. Experienced in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Resume must have complete dates, work schedule, and/or hours worked per week for both civilian and military employment. (Example: 2 JAN 1980 to 3 MAR 1981; 0800-1630 M-F or JAN 1980 to MAR 1981; 40 hrs/wk) Use of year only and unspecified work schedule will result in disqualification.
