The Division of Hematology and Oncology at UCI School of Medicine was founded in 1978. In the more than four decades since that time, we have grown to become a thriving organization with a nationally recognized reputation for training the next generation of outstanding physicians, innovating in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of cancers and hematologic conditions.


Your Role on the Team

The Physician Assistant for Supportive Oncology within the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, is a highly skilled and compassionate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who plays an integral role in delivering comprehensive supportive care to oncology patients. Working under the supervision of the Medical Director(s) and APP Supervisor, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the PA will independently and collaboratively manage patients in the ambulatory setting.
This role focuses on enhancing quality of life for patients across the cancer care continuum by addressing symptom management, psychosocial needs, palliative care, and coordination of complex care plans. The PA will provide direct patient care, patient and family education, interdisciplinary care coordination, and communication with referring providers. As part of the supportive oncology team, the PA will contribute to optimizing outcomes and improving the patient and caregiver experience.
This position may perform:
• Functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice” (In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary.
• Approved privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL privileges
• The PA professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates.
• The PA has responsibility for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidence self-direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within all Health locations and affiliates.
• Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
• The PA is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of oncology, symptom management, and palliative care principles
  • Proficiency in performing comprehensive assessments, diagnosing, and managing complex cancer-related symptoms
  • Familiarity with supportive care interventions such as pain management, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and cachexia
  • Understanding of treatment-related toxicities and side-effect management across various cancer therapies (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation)
  • Skilled in counseling patients and families on prognosis, goals of care, and advance care planning
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Physician Assistant license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Acceptable Certifications: National board certification as Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Certification (ACONP) and/or ONS Chemotherapy Certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • Hematology/Oncology Experience (at least 2 or more years)


Preferred:

  • Previous experience working as a Physician Assistant in Hematology/Oncology.
  • Experience caring for patients enrolled in early phase clinical trials and functioning as a co-investigator.
  • Previous experience in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant & Cellular Therapy.


Special Conditions:

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
