Job summary

The County of Riverside is seeking a Support Services Supervisor for the Facility Services - Operations division in Riverside. You will travel to and supervise staff at various shelter locations, overseeing janitorial, facility maintenance and operations tasks.

The ideal candidate has hands-on janitorial and facilities maintenance experience, plus handyman skills in drywall, plumbing, kennel, painting, and equipment repairs; project management and leadership are highly desirable.

Qualifications

  • Three years of progressive responsibility in custodial, materials management or maintenance.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision; general sanitation, materials, maintenance, communication orders, receiving and distribution.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others; establish and maintain records; prepare clear and concise reports; read, comprehend, interpret and apply policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Oversee daily work performance of team members; review schedules and delegate daily assignments.
  • Assign, review, coordinate and conduct Team and individual training.
  • Assist and support Department with emergency and disaster response and Department events.
  • Maintain documentation for individual team members.
  • Coordinate and conduct team meetings.
  • Coordinate with County Facility Maintenance for larger projects and repairs.

About The Position

The Riverside County Department of Animal Services has an opportunity for a Support Services Supervisor who will be assigned to the Facility Services - Operations division in Riverside and will travel to and supervise staff at various locations throughout Riverside County. The selected candidate will be a hands‑on working supervisor responsible for overseeing and performing daily janitorial, facility maintenance, and operational activities across shelter locations. Responsibilities will include performing and overseeing minor facility repairs, coordinating janitorial services, maintaining kennels and shelter facilities, minor painting, equipment upkeep, furniture removal and installation, warehouse and inventory maintenance, and coordinating deliveries and purchase orders. The Support Services Supervisor will assign and review work, coordinate team and individual training, review schedules, delegate assignments, and monitor the quality and performance of team members while actively participating in the work alongside staff. The Support Services Supervisor will also work directly with County Facility Maintenance (FM), RCIT, vendors, and other agencies to prepare and track work orders, coordinate repairs, and monitor facility projects.

The most competitive candidates will have strong hands‑on janitorial experience, facilities maintenance, and handyman experience including minor drywall, plumbing, kennel, painting, furniture, and equipment repairs. Experience in project management, l ead and/or supervisory experience is highly desirable with the ability to assign work, train and support staff, monitor performance, and lead by example while actively performing the work.

The selected candidate will be required to work at various Department of Animal Services shelter locations throughout Riverside County and assist with emergency and disaster response and Department events as needed.

Schedule: This position is assigned a 5/40 work schedule, which may include any five days from Monday through Sunday. The Animal Services Supervisor may be scheduled to work weekends and holidays and may be required to be on call.

Examples Of Essential Duties
  • Perform facility maintenance and janitorial duties in all areas of each shelter location such as the veterinary clinic, bathrooms, office spaces, and shelter lobbies.
  • Conduct regular walk shelter sites for compliance with instruction and quality of work.

  • Communicate personnel issues, documentation, vacation, sickness, etc. with management regularly.
  • Complete and submit team timesheets.
  • Coordinate and conduct team meetings.
  • Assist manger with coordination of large‑scale facilities projects with other county and non‑county agencies, example FM, RCIT.
  • Represent DAS, at the direction of management, when coordinating with onsite vendors
  • Prepare and submit purchase orders, coordinate deliveries and local donation pick‑ups, operate forklift, and delivery inspection.
  • Participate in the interview and selection process of new employees, development of team performance indicators, and development of policies and procedures and interpret policies to reports as needed.
  • Coordinate with County Facility Maintenance for larger projects and repairs.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Three years of progressive responsibility in custodial, materials management or maintenance.

Other Requirements
License:

Physical requirements:

This is a physically active, hands‑on position requiring the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform frequent janitorial and facility maintenance duties in an animal shelter environment. Duties may include sweeping, mopping, buffing floors, cleaning clinic and shelter areas, handling cleaning chemicals and supplies, and performing minor facility repairs. The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment, including file cabinets, office furniture, donation bags, and other supplies, with assistance as needed. The position may also require working around animals and safely handling, transferring, and transporting animal specimens. Work may be performed on wet or uneven surfaces and in areas requiring exposure to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, odors, and other conditions commonly found in an animal shelter.
