Job summary

Applied Materials is seeking a Supplier Quality Engineer to lead supplier onboarding, audits, and performance management in a fast-paced, high-tech environment in Santa Clara, CA.

You will drive root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement with supplier teams, ensuring readiness for new product introductions and ongoing quality performance across the supply base.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with supplier quality, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, process engineering, or related supplier management roles.
  • Experience with mechanical parts, electronic assemblies, precision machining, welding, surface treatment, cleaning, assembly, or high-technology manufacturing processes is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of ISO 9001 and supplier audit practices.

Responsibilities

  • Supplier engagement and onboarding: participate in supplier selection to build a competitive supply base; conduct supplier audits and drive improvements.
  • Supplier quality and incident management: perform root cause analysis and corrective actions; support manufacturing and field service teams for supplier-related incidents.
  • New product development: collaborate with NPD teams to ensure engineering drawing requirements are clear and communicated to suppliers; assess technical requirements and conduct supplier audits for new products.
  • Supplier performance management: establish and monitor supplier KPIs (quality, delivery, cost); drive performance reviews and corrective actions.
  • Corrective and preventive action management: lead supplier corrective actions and verify effectiveness and containment.
  • Supplier development and risk mitigation: identify capability gaps and develop improvement plans; review readiness and mitigate risks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supplier engagement and onboarding: Continuously participate in the supplier selection process to develop a supply base that provides a competitive advantage in quality, value/cost, delivery, and technology. Conduct supplier technical audits, evaluate supplier performance and capability, and drive continuous improvement opportunities with suppliers.
  • Supplier quality and incident management: Perform quality problem resolution and incident management by driving root cause analysis and corrective actions. Provide rapid support to Applied Materials manufacturing and field service teams to manage supplier‑related incidents.
  • New product development: Collaborate with New Product Development teams to ensure engineering drawing requirements are accurate, clear, and effectively communicated to suppliers. Ensure suppliers are involved in specification development and review to support design for manufacturability. Evaluate technical requirements for new and existing products, conduct supplier new product development process audits, and review production arrangements and readiness.
  • Supplier performance management: Establish, monitor, and improve supplier key performance indicators, including quality, delivery, responsiveness, defect rate, corrective action closure, and cost of poor quality. Drive supplier performance reviews and follow‑up actions to ensure sustainable improvement.
  • Corrective and preventive action management: Lead supplier corrective action requests, verify root cause analysis effectiveness, review containment plans, and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and sustained.
  • Supplier development and risk mitigation: Identify supplier capability gaps, develop improvement plans, support capacity and process readiness reviews, and proactively mitigate risks related to quality, delivery, capacity, and business continuity.
Hiring Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in supplier quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, process engineering, or related technical supplier management roles.
  • Experience working with mechanical parts, electronic assemblies, precision machining, welding, surface treatment, cleaning, assembly, or high‑technology manufacturing processes is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of quality systems and standards such as ISO 9001, supplier audit practices, nonconformance management, corrective action systems, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Proficiency in quality tools, including 8D, 5 Why, fishbone analysis, FMEA, SPC, MSA, process capability analysis, control plans, and PDCA.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical standards, inspection reports, and manufacturing process documentation.
  • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to use supplier performance metrics, defect trends, and process data to identify risks and drive improvement actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, drive closure of corrective actions, and work effectively under schedule pressure.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
