Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Mossville, IL, is seeking a Research and Experimental Mechanic to continuously improve engine test processes. You will assemble, fit, adjust, and dismantle engines ranging from 4.0 L to 340 L, following engineering drawings and models.

The role emphasizes safety, precision, and teamwork across experimental, pre-production, and legacy engines. The position requires 3–5 years in diesel engine service or a related technical degree, with relocation not offered.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years full-time experience in diesel engine service and repair or a 2-year technical degree in diesel power technology/engine power technology.
  • Strong adherence to safety regulations and incident prevention; good communication and teamwork.
  • Ability to think critically in difficult situations with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering theory and design
  • Work from Pro-E and VisView models, blueprints and instructions
  • Assist install builds on gaseous and diesel engines
  • Fit cooling, air, hydraulic connections, wiring harnesses
  • Install test leads, thermocouples and instrumentation
  • Adjust valve train, gear train, fuel, cooling and oil systems
  • Assemble complete units and subassemblies
  • Fabricate intake/exhaust piping and modified wiring harnesses
  • Suggest design improvements from testing data
  • Plan assembly methods and sequences
  • Install/Remove engines from testing cells
  • Use common hand tools, power tools and cranes to assemble parts

Individuals will work on experimental, pre-production, postproduction and legacy engines that range in size from 4.0 L to 340 L.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Engineering theory and design
  • Work from Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints and verbal instructions
  • Assist install builds in various stages on both gaseous fuel and diesel type engines
  • Fitting for cooling, air, hydraulic connections, and wiring harnesses for adaptation of the test device to the test machine
  • Installing necessary test leads, thermocouples, cylinder pressure pick-up gauges, and instrumented test components as required performing the test
  • Perform adjustments on valve train, gear train, fuel system, cooling system, and oil system
  • Assembly of entire unit of a new design or the buildup of subassemblies
  • Aid in the fabrication of intake and exhaust piping, instrumented fuel and cooling lines, and modified wiring harnesses
  • Incorporating improvements and developments in present production models
  • Evaluate and determine reusability of engine hardware during engine builds
  • Uses various precision gauging tools to check accuracy of assembly and fitting operations.
  • Plans method and sequence of assembly
  • Install and remove engines from a testing cell
  • Uses all common mechanic's hand tools, portable power tools, power presses, simple machines tools, and powered crane to assemble parts into complete unit, making alterations and hand fitting parts when necessary
  • Makes suggestions concerning methods of overcoming difficulties encountered in assembly/disassembly and reasons for parts failure
  • Initiate possible changes in design to correct failure, and any other pertinent criticisms or data gained while performing assembly/disassembly or dismantling or construction
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 3-5 years full time working experience in diesel engine service and repair industry OR 2 year technical degree within the disciples of diesel power technology, Industrial; Engine Power Technology, or Caterpillar Dealer Service Technology
  • Top Candidates May Have: Prior experience with engine driven generators Tenacious desire to closely adhere to all safety regulations and policies, as well as robust incident prevention skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to think critically in difficult situations with minimal support or instruction. Strong internal drive to succeed, combined with impeccable personal integrity and unflappable accountability for results.

  • As an Experimental Mechanic at the Caterpillar Tech Center, all tools required to perform tasks in your job role will be provided by Caterpillar.
  • This position is located in Mossville, IL.
  • Relocation is not available for this position.

  • This is a 1st shift position (Monday through Friday)
